Originally, it should have had a roll pin. Is it possible it is a pin and not an allen screw? If so, you need to get a punch the same diameter as the pin, maybe lube it up with some PB Blaster or WD40 and give it a few good whacks. It should slide out if you're already seeing movement. More often than not the pin is frozen in place. I've had to cut several columns to get the steering wheel off, in which case you need to just get a 3/4" piece of round steel stock and replace the column all together. Good luck!

Matt

thank you for your help, I assumed if I disconnected the column at base end by the axle it would slide out. perhaps if I remove the roll pin from steering wheel the remove hood?

thanks again

On the Suburbans I've removed the pin at the bottom and slid the gear off, then you can work on the wheel and shaft out of the tractor.

those steering wheels are really hard to get off! We usually just end up cutting them if they won't go after we heat them with the torch. We have gotten them red hot and still not been able to get them out. ~Jake

:WRS: There has been several threads about stuck steering wheels lately. Try the "SEARCH" box at the top and see what you get. Oh, and if you have been lurking around here before your post, you know....... :wwp:

There is a roll pin that holds the steering gear on and a lock collar with an allen set scew that keeps the shaft from sliding up. You need to take both off to slide the entire shaft up and out.

Opps yes I for got the lock collar, but most times they come loose, just sand the shaft and spray some light oil on it to slide it off the shaft after removing the gear on the bottom.

The old WHs were 80% assembled BEFORE they were painted, so you'll have to strip all of the paint off of the steering column in order to get the lock ring off. Sometimes the roll pin at the bottom of the steering shaft can be just as hard to get out as the pin at the top. If the pin under the steering wheel already has some movement in it, that should be the place to work on it. Lots of PB Blaster, working on it over a week or two, and maybe a little heat should do it. But I also have had to go at it with a Saws-all.

You might not have to remove the wheel from the steering shaft to accomplish whatever else you're trying to do. I just moved the locking collar down the shaft 6-8" to allow me to pull the steering assembly out far enough to get at other components. Good luck.

Jim
