K161 Governor Gear Removal & Spec Question

Recommended Posts

rmaynard

I have a governor gear that seems to have a bit of wobble and I would like to remove it. Does the Welch plug need to be removed in order to get the gear out? I am assuming that it does. This subject is not covered in the Kohler manual.

Also, the manual does not cover the engine (28522E) which has the 2-7/8" piston. My question is, other than the bore and piston size, are all the other specifications the same?

Okay, ignore the first part of the question, I found out how to remove the gear without Welch removal. However, the second part of the question still remains concerning the specs.

I can't think of any differences in early vs. late K-161 engines other than the bore size and the style of camshaft used. (two-piece spark advance vs. ACR)

Yup, I noticed how the cam fell into two pieces when I removed it. That info is in the Kohler manual, so there was no surprise.
