Engine Swap

Recommended Posts

MalMac

Swapping out the K series for a Magnum in a C-145 of the same horsepower, other than getting rid of the engine cradle and bolting the Mag. straight to the frame what else needs changed? There should be some ignition changes also shouldn't there? Good chance this will be temporary until the K can be rebuilt.

As far as I know all the Magnum engines use the big oil pan and you can not put the small pan on that block, so the shaker will have to go, yes the ign. will take diffenet wiring and key switch as the Mag. is magneto ign. not batt. ign. many if not all the Mag. engine I've had all had the reg. for the charging sytem right on the blower housing, I'm not good at drwing diagrams but I'm sure you can with a new key switch and some wiring build a temp wiring harness so you don't have to cut up the orig.

Oil pans on cradle mount and solid mount Kohler don't "swap". They have different footprints.

Ok here is the difference in the big base block and the small base block, there is a exception to the rule and I will show that in the pics.

Small base block, these are the engine like the K241AS any big Kohler that has "AS" on the tag means it is the small base block, this is the style block used with the shaker mount engines.

This is a small base oil pan

This is the big base block oil pan, used on solid mount engines.

This is both pans lined up on top of each other, see how the big pan will not bolt in place of the small pan.

Small base block with oil pan setting on it, there is no place to bolt the big oil pan to this block.

Small base block setting on big base oil pan, again no place to bolt pan up.

Here is a exception to the rule, I have seen a few but not many blocks set up to use both style oil pans, this one is a JD 12hp you can see it has the small pan AND the ears to mount to big pan.

This is a big base block with a small base oil pan setting on it, see where the block is machined out so the pan will not seal.

post-85-0-22513400-1352236563_thumb.jpg

This is the bottom of a big base block, this one is drilled but not tapped in the 4 corners where a small pan would bolt, most I've seen are not drilled, I guess you could drill and tap the holes or on this one tap them, and find a way to seal the ends of the pan at the block, but with the ears on the block, I'm not sure it will bolt in to the shaker mount with out hitting the mount plate for the shaker style tractor.

post-85-0-62016200-1352236631_thumb.jpg

Ok I said it might not fit, and I just had to know, so I went back out to the barn and mocked up a big base block on a small pan and set it on a shaker plate, 3 of the 4 bolts will fit tight but fit, one of them will not, as the engine moves on the rubber mounts the bolts that holds the plate in place through the rubbers do not move, so the ears on the engine block I'm sure will hit at least one bolt if not 2 of them, one on each side, even more so if the rubber mounts are in bad shape like most are.

I've been meaning to do a post like this on the oil pans, and the lack of interchange, and I did get my boo boo fixed up, I hit it against another engine digging the block out.

Maybe I should put this in it's own topic, so it can be viewed for what it is, and not high jacking this thread.

Ok thanks Kelly for setting me strait. :bow-blue: :bow-blue:

I guess I got lucky a sew years ago when I put a JD engine in my C-125 and just swapped the oil pans. Of coarse 1 year later I banished that JD motor to the shed for the KT-17 II that is in there now.

There is information on this on the Brian Miller Site. you have to weld up the cut outs in the block and tap the 4 holes. Some one on My Tractor Forum cut a steel plate to fit the block bolted it up to the out side bolt holes on the block with one gasket and then bolted the small oil pan up through to the steel plate with another gasket. Wouldn't be to hard if you had the steel plate and a plasma cutter.

Excellent post Kelly. I thought I was totally losing it because I knew I did a swap many years ago. Then I saw your exception. That must have been what I had but didn't realize it at the time.
