starting motor hangs up on a K341

Recommended Posts

Last spring the pinion got stuck in the flywheel gear. The short version of the story is that I removed, cleaned, and replaced the starter. That worked until yesterday so I swapped it with another one off a K241 that was cleaned and lubercated. That one got stuck immediately so I suspected a problem with the flywheel gear. Pulled the shroud and discovered that the gear teeth were perfect. So, I drilled a 1/4: hole in the shroud opposite the starter spindle. After a few pokes with a rod through the hole, I got the motor running. I didn't have a problem restarting it later.

I don't see any reason to throw away a perfectly good starting motor. Next time it hangs up I may shoot some WD40 at the worm gear on the starter before I poke it back into position

Anyone have a better idea?

Usually cleaning the shaft and the gear is all it takes.

Maybe check how tight the mesh is between the starter gear and the flywheel? If its too tight it could possibly stick. About the only thing you could do about it is put a thin shim between the block and the starter.

I've had to use a chevy starter shim on a couple that hung up or sounded bad mesh was to tight, you can buy the shims in a pack at most parts stores, you have to modify the shim some to work, but the pack comes with a bunch of different thickness's to choose from.

Make sure the shaft that the Bendix gear rotates on is clean. You can test it off the engine by making sure the spring snaps it back quickly. Do not use grease or regular oil to lubricate the shaft. If you intend to use the machine in really cold weather it is not advisable to even oil the starter Bendix and its gear. The gear has to be free to spin out of mesh with the flywheel ring gear when the engine starts, and any cold grease or oil in it will tend to congeal, making the gear stay in mesh with the flywheel. Any grease or oil will also attract dirt. There are some special dry lubes like graphite or some use white lithium grease.

Yes what JackC said. Clean off any oil or grease and use a dry graphite lube or similar dry film lubricant.

:) I use a product called Slip Plate, dry graphite lube. With this product you have make sure that what you are applying to is clean and dry. Use is in open air as it is some what toxic Use it everywhere you do not want dirt and etc. to collect. :flags-usa:
