Let's get Me a steering wheel! Why so hard?

Recommended Posts

GT14 again. No steer wheel. What was left of the one on it, which I broke, today broke completely off the center metal. It was hex, so was using a big socket and bar to drive what I needed in/out of garage today!

My steer shaft is 3/4" and has a key and threaded for 3/8" bolt on end. I would like a deep dish wheel if any that would fit on, it's kinda low when just flat. I saw pix here of Lawn Ranger from 60's that has three spokes and deep dish. Looks like 3/4 center. How are those held on? Pin? Maybe something from some other brand? Newer plastic one even? Don't know where to start looking, so asking first. I've seen several at some swaps, but most are splined or p;in-on. Maybe I'll have to look at bigger tractors like Farmalls or such. Lots of them have bigger shafts tho, but maybe one will be smaller and I'll be lucky.

From service bulletin 399C

2.1 Models 953 (w/pinion and sector steering) 1054, 1054A, and GT-14 Tractors using P/N

4875 steering wheel---P/N 107121 steering wheel with P/N 102856 insert cap may be used, if

steering shaft is drilled to accept 1/4 x 2" spirol pin, P/N 933221.

Bolt-on steering wheel, P/N 101125, may also be used if it is spaced up with washers to compensate for shorter hub

length, compared with original. P/N 102856 insert cap is also required.

AMC RULES

Search "wheelhorse steering wheel" on ebay, usually a few of 'em from various models on there.

I've taken a few steering wheels off that have both pin holes and keyways. My guess is that you could drill the shaft with a 1/4 inch hole and use any wheel you like.

Garry's bulletin post probably covers this now a read it about 5 times....lol

Looks like only the 1969 GT-14 used the 4875 2-spoke steering wheel plus

Late production 953

1054

1054A

1057

1067

1077

1257

1267

1277

The 107121 described as 15" soft was used 1980-84 but have not looked it up to see where. Was replaced by 25-6260 that was used in 1989 on the Toro HMR-1200 and HMR-1600.

I Don't care if for GT14 or not, as long as the center shaft is 3/4" and key and I can take off cap to put in bolt. I have given up on haveing an exact correct wheel and don't care if it is or not. Someone has drilled shaft for a roll pin, did poor job, is crooked and won't come out correct on good wheel. I do not want to weaken shaft any more with trying to straighten hole or make new from diff direction. Farmall cubs have same shaft and key on ones I saw listed, but is pretty flat wheel. Would really like to have deeper dish to move it up higher and be easier to reach. I hate wheels between my knees like some rigs seem to think we want.

Found one on epay, BUT.......$85! Eeeeps! Guess he knows they are rare. I asked another lister about one for a D series and it has slpines and taper I guess, so no go on those. Might just have to wait for the extra cash to get one if I'm gonna be paying that much for one. Was hoping for the $35 bargain myself... might be dreaming!

Grumpy,

Don't pay that much!!

If Jordan doesn't have some thing for you I will, but it will take me a couple of weeks. I have several decent looking deep wheels. None of them are keyed, but I can fix that.

OK, messing with wheel ideas. I tried on a cub wheel and it fits nice, BUT is flat and between knees and hands might hit stuff while turning. This is the IH Cub, not Cadets. Looking at my pin hole also makes me think it is pretty straight afterall. BUT, it was drilled right thru the center of the key way! Guessing about 1/4" as I have small phillips driver in the hole now. We pinned my MTD wheel on with same driver thru it's stock hole. SO, can look for one with pin hole, won't need key then, or not use keyway maybe and I will still use a bolt on top to fasten. Maybe that will open up my options?
