damon91 7 #1 Posted October 22, 2012 Hello all, I am currently in the middle of rebuilding the K181 for my commando 8. I didnt plan on changing either of the crankshaft bearings. however, I just picked up the block from the machine shop. I had left the bearing in the block and its now full of crust and seized up. from what im seeing, these bearings are around $40 a piece. can I get away with just changing one of do they have to be changed in sets. or do you have tips on where to get them cheaper. Thanks Damon
rmaynard 16,343 #2 Posted October 22, 2012 I'd take the block back to the shop and have them correct the problem that they caused. A good shop should never have done any work without first removing the bearings.

rmaynard 16,343 #4 Posted October 23, 2012 If you don't have any luck with the shop, there is a pair of bearings on eBay for $40.00 plus S&H. Good luck.
MarkPalmer 81 #5 Posted October 23, 2012 That was the first thought crossing my mind but I didn't want to sound rude- it's time to find a new machine shop. At the very least they could have covered the PTO bearing from both sides with some duct tape. I would replace the ball bearings as a pair so both start out new. -Mark-
Fordiesel69 271 #6 Posted October 29, 2012 Find a local bearing place and get them. I have never paid that much. I think I paid $12 a piece for my last 8HP rebuild and they were NTK brand. I got them at wholesale price.
Rooster 192 #7 Posted October 29, 2012 Or you could clean the crud out of the bearing? I'm with everyone else, I'm a machinist & that was just unprofessional.
Buckshot 1 15 #8 Posted October 29, 2012 :) I am with Rmaynard and Rooster on this one. If it was my block, it would have never left the machine shop with out some kind of fix. Either they replace the bearing or reduce the bill the cost of the bearing. Not their cost your cost. :flags-usa:
damon91 7 #9 Posted October 30, 2012 I appreciate the input, I ended up buying 2 new NOS bearings form ebay for $45 for both. This is my first rebuild and I used the machine shop that was recomended to me by the local small engine shop. At first I thought it was my fault for not taking the bearing out, but after hearing your input ill know better for next time. Live and learn I guess... Thanks again for your help.
