Question about paint

I always see these nice tractors that have a nice glossy shine to them. I was wondering how can I get that glossy shine on my restoration projects?

I use acrylic urethane paint which has a high-gloss shine.

Automotive paint, or at least a paint with hardner, and sprayed with a gun.

That info is different for each type/brand of paint. It will be on the label on the can.

If you want a glossy shine on a budget - I use Rustoleum paint mixed 50/50 with acetone + 1oz of Valspar hardener to every 1qt of mixed paint - All sprayed with a home depot HVLP top-fed spray gun.

I can tell you DO NOT EVEN CONSIDER the new Majic paint from Tractor Supply! The stuff sucks and is the crappiest paint I have ever used. Against the advice of others like rmaynard and buckrancher, I thought "I'll give it a chance and work with it."

I can tell you first hand the consistency is poor and it takes FOREVER to dry! It is a complete waste of time and effort. . . the valves suck too I'm not kidding that it took weeks before I could not make a thumb print in the primer even when mixed as instructed. I resorted to letting it bake in the sun in August for days . . .

If you want top show quality and have the ability and $$, do what rmaynard and Kelly said - can't beat that, no way for for looks and longevity.

If you are on a budget, the Rustoleum method is good. The spray bombs (new style - spray any angle) are great and the flow out is good. I've tried wet sanding with 800 and 1200 and clear coating and it looks pretty spiffy

Longevity and hardness may be a factor, but depends on what your priorities are and what you are going to do with the tractor when you're done with it.

A lot of guys have had a LOT of experience on here with different stuff, so take it all in. Either way it's a blast to paint and look at the results when done

I forget who posted it, but search "paint" and you will see some of the cool variations some have done with color and additives like pearl/metallic, whatever you like :happy-hippy:

One thing that I should mention. I use acrylic urethane automotive paint. These paints contain isocyanates, which if inhaled or absorbed through the skin, are extremely dangerous to your health. Special precautions MUST be taken to protect yourself and others.

My point here is that if you should decide to use an automotive paint, be sure to read and follow all directions.

thats funny i read this right after i tryed to spray bomb the hitch for my 314 i thought i didnt shake it enought or got a bad can. it ran all over it was like water with food color in it. its to bad tsc dumped valspar for that junk.
