PTO switch on a 265h keeps melting

Recommended Posts

the pto switch on my toro wheel horse went out so I replaced it and it melted again, why and what would cause this to draw to many amps?

is it the main body of the switch or the area around the terminals that melts?

melting = heat

heat = energy consumed

energy consumed = resistance

resistance = corrosion / oxidation

check for corrosion within the terminals of the wires going to the PTO switch. Are any wires going to the PTO switch crispy or discolored?

You may also want to crack open the burned switch to see if the contacts are melted or possibly vaporized / carbonized. Their condition will give additional clues.

It could be that the PTO itself is drawing too much amperage due to a short, but I would think that you would blow a fuse first. I would ensure the condition of all the wiring leading up to the PTO from the switch and check that the fuse has the proper rating and has not been bypassed. If you have an electrical meter and can check the resistance of the PTO that would eliminate a dead short in the coil.
