cheesegrader 433 #1 Posted October 8, 2012 It snowed this weekend in Michigan's U.P. I burned a cord of wood, and got to work setting up the blower. I found the zerk fitting for the main bearing. I oiled the chain. I put SAE 90 in the gearbox. Is that it? No lubrication for the gearbox linking the drive pulley to the chain? No lubrication for the bearings at the end of the augers? I have the manual, and followed it as well as I can, but, frankly, the maintenance section is a piece of crap. Am I missing something?
Forest Road 594 #2 Posted October 10, 2012 Think ya got it. I rebuilt my whole blower last year. The bushings for the front auger are a joke. When these wear out I'm going to a bearing and carrier assembly. I pulled the plug on both gear cases and check/add gear lube. Hopefully we get some of the white stuff in NY this winter. cheesegrader 433 #3 Posted October 11, 2012 It doesn't make sense to lubricate the gearbox that drives the auger, but do nothing to the one that drives the gears. The manual doesn't say a thing about it. Is there a plug that i'm not seeing to check/add gear oil?
Forest Road 594 #4 Posted October 11, 2012 The gear box between the belt and chain has a plug in the back cover. The oil is only 1/4"deep or so mine never seems to need oil. The front gear box typically leaks I check that one between storms. I use whatever weight gear lube I have on hand. Forget the owners manual. Go with good common sense. Oh don't forget to check the chain tensioner.
