Intro - And a pic of the 160 I'm picking up tonight...

Recommended Posts

Hey all! Have had an old 520H that smoked like a chimney, and then a 310-8 that worked harder than any tractor I've ever had. Recently had a chance to acquire this 160 Auto in trade for a chainsaw. She sat covered in a garage for 13 years. Owner put fresh gas in her and she fired right up. Scheduled to pick it up tonight, and I'll immediately start looking for a snow blade since I'm on a mountain in PA... LOL

I wrench on old Harleys as a hobby, but might have a question or two as I dig into this old girl.

Yeah, I probably wouldn't have done that, but as long as it's not stressing the head or exhaust flange I might just leave it... LOL

A new Stihl Farm Boss. He had four tractors, I had an extra saw. He needed another saw, and I needed a tractor I can plow a long driveway on a mountain with, haul wood, etc. Sounds like we both benefit. I'm hoping she doesn't smoke bad, the tranny is strong, etc...

That's a heck of a deal! No cash involved and a really nice looking tractor. Worried about smoke? Didn't you see it run? If it's been sitting a long time you may want to put a little Marvel Mystery oil through the plug hole. :WRS:

After rereading you post I see you haven't actually seen it in person yet.

I have a New Stihl Farm Boss and a nice MS 460 Magnum. Stihl's are the best! I'd say you did pretty good. I pushed snow with a 160 a few yrs. ago when we got bombed with snow in CT. I can honestly say that C-160 is a very capable snow machine!

Nope, haven't seen it at all yet. Meeting him tonight at a halfway point. Just pictures, emails, texts, and calls for the last few days. I'll keep the forum updated. I'm a member of a couple Harley forums, and this one seems to be just as knowledgeable and helpful. Heck, the motors are even kinda similar... LOL

Welcome to Red Square.

You won't have to "wrench" on that Wheel Horse as much as your HD's!

Well, as an update he couldn't get her to fire when we met, although he and his significant other both stated that it drove right up into the back of the truck. Tractor looked solid except for the gas spewing out of the carb while tried to fire her up till the battery died. I grew up in the South Bend, IN area so I guess I'm a sucker for the old WH iron - I made the trade anyway. I'll post pics of the work I do to get her going and might start a build thread if things get too intense to add to my intro thread.

Thanks everyone. Now to find a dozer blade and a few necessary tuneup parts... :-)

Think you are gonna be satisfied MUCHLY, sounds like might have a stuck needle valve or float with a hole in it, still should have momentarily tried to start, but I know you'll fig it out. Sounds like a heck of a stihl of a deal, Gerry

Welcome! You will like the torque the 16 Kohler puts out. Perfect for plowing! I traded a 1975 "AMF" Sportster, ( ) on my first Wheelhorse and I still have it and use it! (More than I can say for that AMF)! That was over 25 years ago. I'm to your east by about 100 miles in Clinton County. Good Luck with it!

Jay, you hit it on the head. I decided to pull a plug out of an old Craftsman pushmower. Didn't look exactly the same, but the threads and depth of the plug matched. Fired right up! Hydro is leaking a little when used to raise/lower the attachments, but should be an easy fix. Rear brake doesn't work, but with the auto lever I can still work with the tractor while I'm working on the brakes. Very cool old girl with a lot of style. Found a dozer blade within a 1-2 hour drive so that's my next road trip.

I'll post pics as I wrench on her some this weekend...
