jcorava 0 #1 Posted September 25, 2012 I inherited a Toro/Wheel Horse 522xi (2002) with 60" deck and FEL this summer. Man can this little thing work! We only have 2 acres so never envisioned needing an FEL - now I couldn't imagine living without it. Big RedSquare fan here! However, I live in New England and winter is approaching so I am looking for a snowblower, preferably 2-stage. The Toro site lists the 79365 and the 79366 as being compatible. Any other Toro/Wheel Horse blowers work? If any modifications are needed what would they be? Also it looks like Berco/Bercomac makes some blowers that could work, anybody using one and what kind of subframe would I need? Thanks for your help!
Challenger 27 #2 Posted September 25, 2012 May I suggest you be sure to hold-out for a 2 stage. The capability of the 2 stage is remarkable.

shallowwatersailor 3,214 #8 Posted September 27, 2012 :WRS: Sounds like you have a nice machine to use. It might take some looking for attachments as they are specific to the 5xi series. You can also use attachments from the New Holland GT-series (20, 22) as well. These were re-badged Toro Wheel Horse 5xi tractors. I have, for example, a New Holland snow blade on mine.
jcorava 0 #9 Posted February 11, 2013 Thanks for the input... thought I would follow-up. I found a 2-stage snowblower on Ebay. Brand new! Under $700! Goes through 14" of snow like a hot knife through butter. I am having one issue, however. When clearing snow from the recent blizzard after a few minutes of plowing I could no longer raise/lower the blower. I have not taken a close look yet, but was hoping the gurus out there could give me some likely places to look to address this problem.
Jim_M 179 #10 Posted February 11, 2013 (edited) Check the oil in your transmission. It may be low on oil. Make sure the lift mechanism is still attached also. Edited February 11, 2013 by Jim_M
Challenger 27 #11 Posted February 12, 2013 Any Luck with Jim M's suggestions above?
c175inMA 8 #12 Posted February 12, 2013 You might check and see if the belt is slipping. Mine was iced over and the transmission was working sporadically.
shallowwatersailor 3,214 #13 Posted February 13, 2013 Make certain that you have oil in the transaxle; it uses 10W-30 motor oil. I looked at a used 523Dxi one time and the owner was using it with the level not even on the stick! The hydraulic hoses will begin to leak over time without realizing it. He also mentioned of accidentally putting gasoline in the tank one time. You might consider a complete change including the filter because it sounds as if there is moisture in unit. The manual says 4.5 quarts for a change but I have found that it is more like 5 quarts. The system capacity is 7 quarts. I would suggest cleaning the in-line filter screen for the power steering, replacing the filter with a Toro filter, and synthetic motor oil. The hydraulic filter looks like an engine filter but the nfilter media is 10 microns. The oil will not flow as well, especially in the cold. It could be that someone used an engine filter and that may be your problem. Hope this helps! John
Camdg2010 8 #14 Posted May 10, 2014 hey guys, just had a 522xi given to me.... its got a 44" 2 stage blower on it.... i was looking things over and ione thing i noticed is when i push the hydrolic lever down it sounds a little odd (almost like grinding sound or viberating sound) but when it goes up its perfect.... its no hitting on anything and i checked that dip stick under my seat and the lever is spot on and the fluid is perfectly clear..... looks brand new! almost a golden ish clear ish fluid.... like brand new 10w-30! everything else works great! is it doing this sound because theres no attachment on it? i hope nothing is screwed up! also how do these 522's do in the wet heavy snow? im in Vermont and we get alot of wet snow.... im supposed to be using this this winter to do the driveways!
