K141 stalls

Recommended Posts

I've been working on my 552 with k141 a friend and mutual collector just gave me. The motor wasn't in the tractor but came came complete minus the points, wiring and throttle cable. After working all that out and replacing the fuel lines, cleaning the carb and flushing the filthy gas tank I was ready to start it up. After getting it started the motor revved very high. Someone obviously tampered with the governor at sometime. After a few days of adjusting the governor and throttle cable I finally got it to run ok. Now here's my problem, in first, second and reverse gears the tractor runs greet except for the loud and rough rear end. However when I put it in third and release the clutch fast it stalls immediately. But when I ease off the clutch slowly it's fine. Do the k 141 have a governor sensitivity adjustment like the newer k series. Is this what the speed control disc is for? I've played around with the governor and speed disc but can't seem to get it to not stall In third. Do you guys think this is a governor issue at all or do you think it's fuel related?

If the rear-end is loud and rough I wouldn't rule the transmission out to be your problem. If you rev up the motor and then dump the clutch in 1st, 2nd, and reverse gears, (hang on), and the motor takes it without stalling, I'd suspect the rear end to be the problem and not the motor/gov. Good luck either way.

+1 to this. If the transaxle is rough and loud, it likely has increased mechanical resistance that will be amplified when put in 3rd gear. The governor controls engine speed based on where the throttle lever is set, but the response is not instantaneous. If quickly bogged to a point beyond the power rating of the engine and the governor can't throttle the engine back up enough to recover, it will stall.

Couldn't it also be a combination of the two? Tranny is bad so too much load, and governor set too low so engine is not producing enough power? Although you mentioned at the start that you thought someone had monkeyed with the governor and set it too high.. maybe they did this to overcome the resistance in the (failing) transmission.

It is ver hard to shift into gear, i have to slam the shifter to get it in gear. Also Its hard to start the engine in gear, in neutral it starts first time every time. I'm reluctant to say it's fuel or governor because it will idle smooth and has absolutely no smoke. When riding in second and third the rear does chatter and groan almost sounds like a worn bearing or something but I've never cracked one of these open. When I slam on the brakes especially when going fast nothing happens at first then the rear wheels lock up followed by a series of clunks until the tractor stops. If this is rear end problem I'd feel better because I've been fiddling with the motor and governor for days and I got it running good I just can't take off hard in third without stallig out.

Whether you have an engine problem or not, it sounds as though you have a much more serious problem with the rear end.

I'd forget about the engine for the time being and get the gearbox sorted out first.
