tractorbeast 27 #1 Posted September 19, 2012 I have a kohler 10hp K series 1979 engine that has a plug, instead of a dipstick. would someone have a part number to replace this plug with a dipstick assemby. It doesnt show this in the WH manual. thanks so much.
rmaynard 16,343 #2 Posted September 19, 2012 There should be a dipstick on the underside of that plug. But if there isn't, you will have to find a used one. That part has been discontinued.
tractorbeast 27 #3 Posted September 19, 2012 I guess I should have said something like a dipsick tube, like my 1984 12hp K-301 has. I would like to check the oil without wrenching out the plug. The 1979 10 hp does have a dipstick on the end of the plug. Thanks for the reply
rmaynard 16,343 #4 Posted September 19, 2012 Unfortunately, the Wheel Horse K241's never had a tube, just a plug.
tunahead72 2,551 #5 Posted September 19, 2012 (edited) I'm a little confused about what you're saying here, Bob. My 1981 C-105 (with a K241) has a threaded plug-type dipstick, I believe like tractorbeast is describing on his 1979 engine. My 1986 310-8 (also with a K241) has what I think Kohler calls an extended fill tube and dipstick. At any rate, tractorbeast, I can't really answer your question about converting from one style to the other, but there's a K241 parts manual here on RedSquare that might help you: EDIT: Just thought of something else. On my C-105, I sometimes don't bother to tighten the dipstick plug all the way with a wrench, just tighten it as much as I can by hand and call it done. It's never leaked that I can recall, and I can usually remove it again the next time without using a wrench. Edited September 19, 2012 by tunahead72
rmaynard 16,343 #6 Posted September 19, 2012 I'm a little confused about what you're saying here, Bob... Tunahead72 - I stand corrected. What I should have said was that the C-Series K241's did not have a tube.
MarkPalmer 81 #7 Posted September 19, 2012 There were a lot of different styles of dipsticks used on the K series. I can't say it's true in ALL cases, but in all I have seen of the style that use the extended tube with pull out dipstick, the metal tube is not threaded but press fitted in to the block with an opening that is quite a bit larger than the opening for the threaded plug-type dipstick. In the styles I see for sale used on E-Bay, I haven't seen a tube with threads on the end that would be a direct swap for the plug type. The plug type is fun to burn your fingers on when checking oil with the engine hot -Mark-
tractorbeast 27 #8 Posted September 19, 2012 Thanks much for all the good info. The manual shows the various tubes, I didnt realize they made so many different styles. The 1980 c-105 I got this summer is my first Kohler that has the plug type dipstick.
