Runninghorses 0 #1 Posted September 18, 2012 Hey guys! I'm new on here. I always have a few horses in the garage to play with, so I figured I'd better join!! Anyway. I have a 1970 Raider 12 in restoration progress. I believe it is not the starter/generator type because it's not belt driven off the crank, correct? It still seems to start like a starter generator type. It starts slow and rolls a few times and then catches. I was wondering if this is normal or not? It always starts, and it runs great, but it just turns over like a Model T! Any help would be appreciated!! Thanks! -Andrew
rmaynard 16,404 #2 Posted September 18, 2012 :WRS: The Raider 12 has a standard starter, not a stater/generator. Your starter may just be getting weak and turning over slowly. Just as long as it starts, that's what's important. How about posting some pictures for us.
Save Old Iron 1,571 #3 Posted September 18, 2012 Andrew, Welcome If you have a voltmeter, check the voltage across the battery when the engine is cranking. A voltage under 10 volts could indicate a weakened battery requiring replacement or possibly just an insufficiently charged battery. Check the battery voltage while the engine is running. To properly charge a lead acid battery, the charge voltage should be at least 13.8 and less than 14.5 (ish). If the battery checks out ok, remove and clean all the terminals to the battery starter circuit. A small amount of corrosion on the terminals can lead to a drastic decrease in crank speed. The physical connection of the starter to the engine may also be corroded, causing poor current flow thru the starter. A quick test to confirm a bad starter would be to place a set of jumper cables directly across the starter electrical connections. If the starter still cranks slow, a rebuild / replacement may be needed. click on image to enlarge If you need more help or some clarification - let us know.
