C-120, New battery, fluctuating Ammeter

Recommended Posts

groundhog47

Battery Ignition and engine operation.

Even b4 the new battery my ammeter at any higher ( edited>slight to normal), at slowest idle swings back and forth (about 1/3 edited> to full swing).

Don't know if this is frame vibration or regulator. At engine off, key on slight discharge (reading should be normal), on key on slow idle steady charge indicated (as should be)( Edited> is bouncy)

Has anyone else experienced this prob.

Thanks

Interesting.

Assuming it is a battery ignition system, you might consider removing the connector from the rectifier, to isolate the AC from the engine from the system. You can run the engine off of the battery for a short while. If it still fluctuates, then I would say the problem is with the meter.

That seems like the logic I missed, found a similar post that had a bad ammeter, Thanks, out to try and yes will edit in batt ign.

I have a B-100 (same charging system as your C-120) with a bouncy (fluctuating) ammeter also. It still charges though. With the stator (AC) removed from the system as stated above, it still bounces all over the place. My conclusion is that I have a good charging system, but a weak ammeter. As long as the battery stays charged, I can live with a fluctuating ammeter.

Good point Bob. Bouncing ammeters are pretty common.

An even easier check would be to just check the ripple at the battery with the system hooked up normally. If it is low, and the charge voltage is correct, then I would just live with it.

Ya'll must be correct, good charging and I initally got the fluctuating backwards. Frustration made my eyes dyslexic. As suggested will live with it and stop worryin'. Good Day
