WH Raider10 17 #1 Posted September 11, 2012 Hi all, It's been a while since I made a last post with something new. Last week I bought a 1972 Commando 800 with 36" deck. The engine has little compression and it runs like crap! The other day there came a half a meter flame out of the exhaust!!! Also it leaks oil somewhere. I allready cleaned out the carb and made a new gasket for carb and a gasket for fuel pump. The engine will only run on idle with choke on. When you throttle it up it will backfire and die. You can see the governor arm move from left to right and I think that's where my problem is. I allready reset the governor but no luck so far. I've made a pic of the throttle setup and I'm not sure if that is original or not? Here some pics: P-J
Pollack Pete 2,273 #2 Posted September 11, 2012 Sounds like the carb is plugged. At least that's what I've seen before with having to run with the choke pulled out. Also, looks like something missing on the throttle linkage. Is that the bare end of the throttle cable I'm seeing??? Great looking Horse though. But,aren't they all??Good luck with your new toy.
Rock farmer 41 #3 Posted September 11, 2012 Sounds like a fuel problem to me. Drain whole system. Disconnect fuel line from pump. pump it dry. Replace that fuel filter! Clean carb and points. Try again! Good luck! Joe
WH Raider10 17 #4 Posted September 11, 2012 Thanks for the info fella's! i just took the head of the engine to clean it up and I saw it has been bored over .020 I do not know when this was done and the past owner didn't told me, but the piston is nice and tight in the cylinder. I'll degrease the engine and rebuild the carb, new fuel line, filter and clean the points. P-J

meadowfield 2,756 #7 Posted September 12, 2012 Deffo sounds like lack of fuel, pump or blockage somewhere... had the same issue with my Gt14 recently, the pump just not wanting to work efficiently. It would stop running and then only run with the choke on. Fingers crossed its now fixed.... Mark
WH Raider10 17 #8 Posted September 13, 2012 I took the valves out of the engine and the exhaust valve is burned and not sealing, it will need to be replaced. I also took the fuel pump apart and cleaned it. Thanks for all the nice comments! P-J :)
