Towing with a 520.

Recommended Posts

Here's the deal. CT. is having a massive tree trim and tree take down due to the mess we went thru last October. CL&P is footin the bill. I was told the budget for CT. is 53 million. I live in the deep woods and there is at least 50 large Oak and Ash trees being taken down on my street. I have seven large ones in my yard alone. I will be taking many of the cut up trees from my neighbors yards to split up for a little firewood business I have going.

I'll need a tractor to pull my 5x8 trailer around when the areas are too tight to get my truck into. I know a hydro isn't the preferred tractor to pull heavy loads. How much do you guys think a 520 can safely tow without hurting the hydro? I won't be going up or down any hills. I'm thinking I might have to add a gear jammer to my collection. I sure wish I kept my Economy that had the loader on it right about now! I know a compact tractor would be great but I don't have the cash for something like that.

Don't know, but you may need to add weight or chains or both so the rear wheels don't spin.

I don't think you will hurt the hydro.

There is a cooling fan by the right rear wheel that keeps it cool.

Maybe temporarily remove the rear fender to allow it to stay cooler.

Take what I say with a grain of salt, but I don't think you can hurt the tranny in a 520H towing. I would definitely be careful with how much weight you have on the trailer if you are going up and down slopes. Ag tires and weights can and will help, but use caution.

Good luck,

Bill

Just make sure you have a good hitch set up and go slow. It should work just fine for your needs. The front of the tractor may lift it if it too heavy, so be care full. if your hot light on your 520 still works, that will tell you that your doing too much for the tractor. I use mine for moving trees all the time and never had any issues.

Thanks guys, I was just wondering if their was any type of set number that Wheel Horse may have come up with. I'm pretty well educated on the safety aspects, I've done extensive towing thru the yrs.

I feel like I read a number somewhere in this forum (from Wheel Horse) about 500 lbs... somebody else will surely know. I think it was related mostly to the safety aspects (going downhill w/ a load). I personally have towed more than that with the C-160 Auto... but the tranmission died shortly thereafter.... coincidence? (I don't know!) This was actually the main motivator for me buying the C-100 8-speed... hard to go wrong with {lubricated} metal on metal gears for heavy hauling. Cheers to you on the new business!

Ken I dont see a problem with it towing a trailer. However I would make sure to watch the tongue weight of the trailer on the rear hitch. A couple wheel horses that I have had, both had rear hitches that drooped down from having too much weight on them. But I do know where there is a Jim Dandy not to far away from me for $250. I will give you the info if you want it.

KEN IF YOU WANT I WILL LEND YOU A VERY HEAVY DUTY HOMELITE T-16 TRACTOR TO USE. IT WILL PULL MORE THAN YOUR 520. (WITCH IS TOO NICE FOR PULLING.) YOU CAN KEEP IT AS LONG AS YOU NEED. IF IT BREAKS NO HARM. RUSS 203-846-0755

Or you could buy my 418A with ags and the 42" deck that you want =]. To use for pulling logs.

I don't think you will have a problem with the hydro, I have pull started 5000lb tractors several times with a 1200+ hour 416h. I second the tongue weight thing though.

I've easily moved 4,500 lbs (10x16 barn with trailer weight) with one of mine, but that was with a double axle trailer with hardly any tongue weight, going slow, and on flat ground. I wouldn't have done that with a single axle trailer though.

Ken,

Do yourself a favor and come over and pick up my Economy and use that. I have the 3 point on it as well. I would rather see it being used than sitting idle. I will be around all weekend doing demo work on the kitchen :hide:

I really appreciate the offer Russ. After doing some further talking with my neighbors they seem to now think that hauling and splitting wood is an easy task. They think the log splitter does all of the work and the rest is a cake walk. Most of them couldn't swing an ax. I was mostly told that if I split it ALL up that I can have SOME of it. (Each neighbor has at least 4 huge oaks being taken down.) AIN'T gonna happen, it can sit in the front of their yards now for all I care. Someone must have told them its valuble to sell, which it really isn't with all of the heavy lifting involved.

Thanks Steve, we shall see. Read above post. Demo work in that beautiful kitchen? Really?

I would think with all the trees that came down last fall that the value of wood is lower now? In terms of the kitchen that is on the front burner now and my barn is on the back burner... I will explain at another time. We are re doing the kitchen 100%. cabinets, floors, appliances, taking down walls etc etc. I started with one wall today (sheetrock only) the second one tomorrow.

Read somewhere in WH literature, and I'm sure a safety issue, tow max weight 275 lbs. Ridiculous!

Good luck with the tree work.
