groundhog47 347 #1 Posted September 6, 2012 Yest had carb needle stuck, removed and reinst condensor and coil, inadvertantly left key on. Coil was hotter than I cared to hold for long. Mowed yard fine. Today high and low speed intermittent spark doesn't look good blue (old eyes though spark viewer verified). Giggled wiring near coil contacts and before and under point box, and could feel point operation (haven't inspected them). Coil was cool approx 15 min run up. What is a best guess for prob: points, condenser, coil, or unlikelyest? almost broken wire to coil contacts
SousaKerry 503 #2 Posted September 6, 2012 I would replace that coil if it is heating up, check your wiring and put on a pint kit if it has been awhile since the last tuneup
Kelly 1,033 #3 Posted September 6, 2012 I'd say you may have burned up the coil, at least the points, I'd start with new points and condenser, be sure to hook the cond. up to the neg side of the coil, check the points lead wire be sure there are no melted spots. groundhog47 347 #4 Posted September 6, 2012 Hey, thanks, will take advice. I've had C since 1981, points are prob 1976 original. Was curious if anyone had exp'd a hot coil and it sounds like you are in my path of diagnosis. Again Thanks.
groundhog47 347 #5 Posted September 6, 2012 You too Kelly, Thanks. A l o n g time ago I heard some advice: do not leave a not running engine ignition on. Will go out shortly and check points. Will get some new ign goodies no matter what, teach me to not look at that key before pulling the carb, would say Ha, but it was a costly not funny error.
