brandon32269 2 #1 Posted September 4, 2012 I just recently bought a WH A-100. The starter was bad in it so I ordered a new one and got a new battery. I put them in and it started right up. I rode it around slowly for a few minutes then it stalled out. Now it won't start. it just clicks when you turn the ignition. I used to be able to turn the head of the engine and hear the compression. But now I can't move it at all. Im so confused on why its doing this. I have been waiting anxiously for a week for the starter and now this. Please help.
305 380 #2 Posted September 4, 2012 you can't turn the engine over by hand?
brandon32269 2 #3 Posted September 4, 2012 No. Not anymore.
tunahead72 2,553 #4 Posted September 4, 2012 Did it run before your battery and starter problems? If you have a voltmeter, what's the voltage reading on the battery right now?
whfan74 2,072 #5 Posted September 4, 2012 The starter didn't get stuck in the flywheel did it?
brandon32269 2 #6 Posted September 4, 2012 The guy i bought it from started it up when i bought it and said its hit and miss with the starter. When i got home i fried the starter. The battery was junk so i bought battery and starter. It started up an ran good right after i put them in. Everything appears to be fine besides the point that i cant turn it over with my hands. 305 380 #7 Posted September 4, 2012 well , if you can't turn it over by hand either the motor is locked up (oil level?) or as already suggested maybe the starter is jammed into the flywheel
brandon32269 2 #8 Posted September 4, 2012 I took the starter off and still cant turn it over by hand.
305 380 #9 Posted September 4, 2012 maybe it's hydraulic lock from being too full of oil. take the spark plug out and see. it may be time to break out some tools and take it apart
brandon32269 2 #10 Posted September 4, 2012 Ill try that thanks. And I took a gear puller and took the top off "flywheel" off to see if anything was stuck to the flywheel holdin it and it all looks good.
brandon32269 2 #11 Posted September 5, 2012 Ive checked everything. The motor just wont turn over. It turns over when i tighten the bolt back on top off the engine but you cant by hand. Therefore theres no way the starter can turn it over. Im about done with this thing. This is my first wheel horse an i get it runnin and it just dies on me. Most likely going to be my last. Will probably just sell the thing.
305 380 #12 Posted September 5, 2012 don't give up yet , it's not wheel horse's fault....i believe it has a Briggs & stratton engine? and it's about 20-25 years old?anything can wear out and anything can be fixed
brandon32269 2 #13 Posted September 6, 2012 Its a 1976 I believe and its a 10 HP briggs and stratton. Not sure what else to check on it.
roscoemi 245 #14 Posted September 6, 2012 Can you turn it over by hand if the spark plug is removed? Did it run low on oil and the piston rings get stuck to the cylinder? In the past I have removed a cylinder head and smacked the piston with a piece of wood to solve this kinda problem on a Briggs motor.
brandon32269 2 #15 Posted September 6, 2012 The oil is good and it wont turn over by hand even without the spark plug in. But if i put a socket on the bolt on just under the mesh on the top on the engine it will turn but theres no way a starter would be able to push it tht hard to turn it over
Ed Kennell 42,126 #16 Posted September 6, 2012 Check that the belts are free on the motor pulley. If free and you still can't turn it, chuck your socket in a 1/2 " variable speed drill and run it till it starts or locks up. At least you'll know where the problem is. Kelly 1,033 #17 Posted September 6, 2012 I see your in MI where at? if you close I might be able to help, it sounds like the engine is siezed up, I have a lawn tractor like yours and the carb leaks gas in the oil when not running if I don't shut the gas off, and if I was to run it with gas in the oil I'm sure it would not run long. You need to get a real WH a Garden tractor with a Kohler a much better tractor, not just a lawn mower.
