There are different 42 inch decks over the years. What is the model number of yours?

It could be any one of three different types. It would be best to take it apart to see what type as it may have been replaced with a newer spindle assembly. There is Double-D on the older ones with blade and pulley held with 3/8" bolts, then 3/4" keyed pulley type , then metric with 5/8" pulley with out a key.

EDIT: Looks like Don1977 types faster than I do... :handgestures-thumbup:

The deck model number will help a lot, but keep in mind that somebody may have replaced the spindle at some point in its history (this is on your C-120?). There's at least two spindles that I know of that will fit into the same housing, with different bearings.

You can get a clue by checking the size of the nut that threads onto the top of the spindle. If you have the spindle assembly apart, you can also check to see whether the pulley and shaft are keyed.

My spindle has a 3/8 bolt holding the blade on and a key on the top shaft with another 3/8 bolt

If you are right about the key at the top it's different from anything I have seen. My guess is that the 3/4" shaft has two flat sides that hold the pulley and blade. That's What we call Double-D.

Here is a Double-D. Don't have a picture showing the flats on the shaft.
