krazy_horse 59 #1 Posted August 26, 2012 I had my cooling shroud off today to check the fins for grass etc. but for the life of me I cannot find the S and T mark, I first looked thru the small hole on the shroud before i took it off, as you can tell I have never set the time on a Kohler before. That is probley why a couple of my tractors are a Bear to start. I plan to clean the flywheel tomorrow with brake cleaner an OO steel wool. If I do find the mark I will put a dab of white paint on the S. I have just put points and set them at .20 I guess my question is: About where would the mark be? Thanks Guys. rmaynard 16,343 #3 Posted August 26, 2012 Get an ohm meter that has a buzzer for continuity. Take the blower cover off of the engine. Remove the spark plug. With the ignition switch off, connect one probe to ground, and the other to the points wire. Be sure that the points are initially set at .020. Rotate the flywheel by hand in it's normal direction (clockwise as viewed from the flywheel side) until the points close. At this point you should be hearing the buzzer indicating that the points are making contact. Continue to rotate the flywheel slowly until the buzzer just stops. That means that the points are just beginning to open. Now look at the flywheel starter gear ring and you should see the "S" mark lined up with the mark on the bearing plate (which is in direct line with the viewing hole). 1 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

I have a small 12 volt lite with two leads and allagator clips that I use for setting static timing on my air cooled volkswagens. Could I clip on each side of the points,in other words the lite would burn when the points made contact. In your openion would this acomplish the same result? The reason I suggest a buzzer is so that you can't turn the flywheel without having to look at a light or a meter. You hear the buzzer and know that you have hit the spot when it stops buzzing.
