junker wheel horse needed

Hi all, been a while since I been on line. Yall's help with my B 80 was GREAT! Got it running in time for an engine show back in July for me and my boy. Gotta post some pics of us when I figure out how to add pics.

I am a hit miss engine guy. I bought the B 80 originally to put a hit miss engine on it to run at shows. When I got it home, though it was REAL Rough looknig! The Kohler k181 ran like a top no smoke or nothing. So I fixed the tranny shifter with parts from Mike. I can't bring myself to cut it up. Wanna keep it that way. It runs just to good to mess with.....

However, I am still looking to get back to my hit miss mower project. What I have is an old fairmont railcar engine from the 20's. The horizontal engine wheel horses work well to belt up to a hit miss. On most models like the B-80 I have you got plenty of room in front to mount the large hitmiss engine once original engine and all other parts, hood, etc. are stripped.

I was just wondering if anyone had a junk wh they would sell near Robbins NC 27325............... I am not looking to hurt a rare mower or rip up a nice mower. I Just want a horizontal engine type junker "scrap yard save" with a good transmission. It doesnt matter size or model as long as I got room in front and can run a belt back to the transmission. If yall have or know of something. Let me know. I will keep you posted on the project. Should be real neat if I can swing it .......

Talk to Jake Kuhn He has a wheel horse with a stationary engine he wants to sell. Logistics may be a problem though

Well mine is not a hit/miss engine. But it is still a very old fairbanks morse z. Somewhere in the 1930's it was made. I'm quiet a ways but if you were interested send me a pm and I'll get you some pics. Jake

  • Thanks Jake. A little far to drive :) though. I would like to see pics of how you have it belted up to get ideas for mine. My engine is not a true hit miss either. It's a fairmont railcar engine. It has flywheels and looks like a hit miss, similar. Hopefully I can find one somewhat near home. The B-80 frame or one like it does well cuz its long and has flat angle steel like front underneath. Maybe something will turn up somewhat near.... Looking forward to the pics if you can post. Thanks, Jamie

Jamie, Not sure how far you are willing to travel but, if you are anything like me , as long as it's in the same time zone and I want or need it, I'll find justification. I just recently traveled nearly 800 miles round trip for a 5.5 dump cart. Crazy? YUP!

That being said, I have a 70ish WH 14 automatic I bought for the engine. I did a quick map quest and you're about 746 miles out. (Brattleboro, Vermont) I admit thats slightly further than any of my road trips. But it's here if you"re so inclined.

Cool pics! Also, thanks for all the offers, just a little out of my driving range. Hope to see more pics. Giving me some great ideas. I got to a hit miss engine show every July, you see some neat butt buggies there. Hopefully, by next year, I can get something rigged up with my fairmont railcar engine and my son can inherit my B-80. It's funny, I picked up that B-80 for junk. When I got it, the guy said, "my dad rebuilt that engine before we quit using it and let it sit". When I got it home, it ran great. A little tranmission work with LOTS of help from you guys and Mike and I was able to make a nice tractor out of it, though it's still ugly. One thing for sure, these mowers were made tough.

Hopefully someone will have something to sell that will work and I can get to it. I guess I could use a cub cadet or john deere horizontal engine type, but the wheel horses are tougher for such a conversion I think. The engine weighs a lot and the torque would kill a cheap made transmission. .

Jamie...Did you notice the "jack-shaft"?

He had to make the jack-shaft because the roratation was backwards to hook up direct to the transmission pulley.

He even has a "hand clutch" on this horse. I told him that the Wheel Horse guys would cry when they saw what he used for his belt guard!

Its a neat set up! Great job. Can't wait to see more pics and more ideas. I hope I can find a junker B80 or similar frame junker nearby. Thanks for the pics, gives me some great ideas.

one thing that will help me with mine is that the fairmont railcar engine I got will run in either direction. That should help on setting it up. The only thing I am thinking is that it will have to be mounted off center to line up with the tranny pulley unless I get a bigger wheel horse than the B-80 I have. Of course I guess a little off center is alright..... It's tempting to cut my B-80 up, but it just runs too good and my son loves it.

Don't cut up a good tractor, any C-Series, 300 Series or 400 Series will work if a B-80 tractor is big enough. I believe that rail car engine turns a slow RPM and a geared transmission would be better choice. What is the top RPM on that engine? You might want to use a jack shaft to gear it up some. Shouldn't be hard to find a tractor with out an engine or with a blown one. Post in the classified section should find something closer.

No worries. Not gonna cut it up. :) Its got a rough body, but its also my boy and I's first and only horse so far..... :) I will post an add and keep this forum going too. I like the pics I am getting, it gives some neat ideas for set up. The fairmont is a two stroke... 4 hp rated. It turns around 700 rpms guessing. spoked flywheels and water hopper but its not a true hit miss. Lots of torque. HEAVY. maybe 200 pounds. Have to be mounted offset or a jack shaft might help avoid that in lining up belts. Good idea. I think it would be a sweet ride for shows. If any have some close ups of pics of similar set ups with jack shafts etc... it would be a help :) I will get some pics posted of fairmont engine soon.... plus some of me and my boy on the b80

Hey all! I was wondering what yall thought of a hydro tranny for the hit miss engine idea I have. The engine I have is not really hit miss. It's a fairmont railcar engine. I asssume 700-800 rpm roughtly. The tractor would be a 72 charger with auto trans. I was just worried about the torque issues on a auto tranny from this engine. I would do a jack shaft that would help with that. Are the hydro's pretty tough gear wise. and do they worlk like modern mowers with hydro, just push the pedal for speed. Thanks for everyones help and offers! If hydro will work, my prob may be solved.

Technically you cant use "junk" and wheelhorse in the same sentence...unless the word not is involved! Haha You might look for a john deere! Haha
