D Block 2 #1 Posted August 16, 2012 We've got an old workhorse parts tractor with a Briggs 16hp twin. It needs a valve seat and a refresh. I'm thinking about taking it to the machine shop to have it repaired and then ploppin into my 310-8. Anything additional I should look out for? Should I just stick with the Kohler one-lunger? MarkPalmer 81 #2 Posted August 16, 2012 For what it will cost to refurbish the Briggs, stick with the cast iron Kohler as it's a considerably better engine IMHO. -Mark-
Fordiesel69 271 #3 Posted August 16, 2012 Although I agree the 10HP kohler can be considered a better, more bullet proof engine, a well maintained briggs twin will run circles around the 10 hp in terms of power. When the 10HP lugs down in heavy grass it still pulls thru it but the deck will cut like crap. With the 16 you will simply blast thru it and hardly loose 100 rpms. Rooster 192 #4 Posted August 17, 2012 If you do decide to go with a Briggs twin I would not use that old 40 cube. The newer 42 cube engine is a much better piece and are easily found. If your rebuilding the Briggs, you'd be ahead to find the bigger more reliable engine.
JackC 617 #5 Posted August 21, 2012 The twin will give you more power and a twin runs smoother than a single. I bought a 1996 314H in great condition with over 1000 hours on the engine. The PO took great care of it. The engine runs fine and does not smoke but the hood hinges were severely worn from the vibration from the 14 horse Kohler Magnum. Most of my collection have twins.
