B-80 some engine assembly questions

Recommended Posts

Well, have rebuilt my B80's K181 8hp Kohler. Couple things I'm not sure about on assembly. Should have taken pix like I have heard of before tear-down. Issues concern the pulley and pto clutch and the governor linkage. Have some pix here to look at and help me explain. first, how far onto the shaft does the main drive pulley go? Seems like it was quite a ways back, but not sure if there is a measurement or such to case or it it isn't even important? Have the key, put it on crank in about orig spot. Know of the two set-screws but need position?

Second is the governor. There is a little bracket/arm that gets tight under the gove nut I think. The round part with holes stays loose. I'm thinking cable goes to that tab on round part. But with arm sticking straight out seems like cable would be hanging way out the side of tractor?? Need to know if I have those two parts on right.

The gov arm has a spring on it, never took it off. Book says one end goes into slot on the round moving part. I do that and the spring tension seems pretty strong and holds throttle wide open then. Just seems the pull is too hard. I can't move the tab on the round part by hand to move throttle, spring is too tight. Didn't try hooking up cable yet, not sure of location for mounting.

I put a small cable holding arm guess it was for choke cable. I compared to my other WH and is same place, right next to the fuel pump and the line going up to carb. So, think I have that one right.

I'm not sure if I have the choke and throttle cables on right sides of dash. Throttle cable is metal stripped one, no cover and choke is now one with plastic coating on it. Those right? They both have cable mount clips and not sure yet where they all bolt to. Hoping I have cables right, as they have diff size clips between them.

SEEMS my pix are too big, will come back after I mess with them. Anyone have pix of their engine in a rig?

the bracket for the choke cable is in the right place the cable should run down under the motor or between the blower housing and

block thru the opening between the two

the gov. set up

hopfully someone will post a pic of thier setup but from what I see is: notice the arrow on the tab under the brass nut it should

be pointing down also see the brass pin in the round disc that is a throttle stop for setting max rpm that can be on ether side of

the bracket with the arrow if your throttle cable came over the motor the bracket with the arrow needs to go up to the around the 11:00 position with the brass pin underneath the bracket. If the throttle cable runs under the motor the bracket with the arrow would

be around the 7:00 position with the brass pin in the round disc above the bracket with the arrow I hope this helps some

like I said hopfully someone will post a pic. of thier's

Finished up engine and mounted in tractor. Choke hooked up fine. Throttle I had to think about. I finally DID put that arm down to about 7:00 o'clock position like you noted. I also ran the cable into the round part of wheel and not into that arm. THAT made more sense and seemed to work. I really think that little arm is for a spring or something. Seems like it could use that to move better. Have no idea where other end would go to IF there really is one?? Engine didn't seem to want to start at first. Finally got a fire or two out of it and one time struggled to run. Finally figured out it wouldn't fire while cranking, yet did fire when I released the key! So must be some witing issue?? I believe it has the wrong key in it. Seems it is for a Mag and Mag and Grnd terms are not hooked to anything. Also don't have place on switch for the batt term off regulator. The ammeter wasn't wired in, but now is and seems to work in discharge at least. Can I just wire the reg term to the batt wire side of the selonoid with out drawing down batt when off or any other issue? Seems I've had PK's wired like that. Later figured out the points setting was biggest issue. Seem to be real touchy and ran like timeing was off, now power, backfiring and such. Now it starts right away, but takes a little warming to really run better. Think it still needs points tweaking. I did end up putting the old set back in, the new chinese ones just didn't seem to be too well made, specially at thier pivot and wiggled too much. Got running pretty good, and drove around some even to check the clutch/belt and stuff. Gotta get the batt charge working and maybe a new batt and tweak a little more and should be good to go.
