Stalling after 45 Min.

So I hooked up the old coil and the motor starts. Is it possible the coil (napa ic64sb) is incorrect?

The coil could be for an electronic ignition - not a points based ignition system. If you have a multimeter, ohm out the coil (+) to (-) terminals. The resistance should be 3 - 5 ohms. If the coil resistance is much lower, say less than 2 ohms, the coil was intended for an electronic trigger - not points.

p.s. the oil sloshing around was not meant as a condemnation of a coil, just to alert you the coil will not be epoxy filled.

Oil filled coils are much more susceptible to long term heat and vibration damage than epoxy filled coils. Epoxy coils are well worth the extra $10. Bosch Blue coils will last a lifetime.

While you are back at NAPA, see if they have translucent (clear) fuel line. I really like the idea of temporarily splicing in clear tubing from the pump to the carb bowl. Seeing is believing if you are getting vapor locked or fuel starved.

We agree about the fuel pump and/or the tank filter screen. We had one case where the owner used a long

funnel and collapsed that filter !!

A combo fuel pressure / vacuum gauge spliced into the fuel line prior to the filter would be able to indicate if a vacuum is developing in the filter back to the fuel tank. This would be another troubleshooting tool to confirm a bad fuel pump. If no vacuum forms, fuel pump becomes the a more likely suspect. If any vacuum develops, then suspect collapsing fuel line or plugged shutoff valve / valve screen. If you uncap the fuel tank and the vacuum disappears, then the fuel cap is suspect. Regardless if the hole in the cap is plugged or not, I wonder if the "anti slosh" diaphragms in the cap can also cause failures in allowing the cap not to properly vent.

I am currently switching out the coil and replace the fuel line with a clear fuel line. I will report back after that. It seams like most are saying - its the fuel pump. We will see.

Well I switched out the coil for a kohler coil. Tractor runs but still stalls after 45 min. I guess the next course of action is the fuel pump. I forgot to mention - when it is stalling - I put the choke on and the motor lasts for maybe one more minute. Does anyone have a good contact for purchasing a new fuel pump and part number. Thanks

So to close the saga of stalling after 45 minutes... I replaced the fuel lines, coil, fuel pump, condenser, spark plug and checked the points/gap. Spending about 90$ on all parts. Three weeks of trying to figure out the problem. IN THE END - It was a blocked fuel filter in the gas tank. You know the shut off - 90 degree angle valve with the little metal filter. The filter was crushed and plugged up with crap. One new 90 degree angle and shut off valve for 5$. Back in business. I wish I had figured all this out prior to sending the 90$ on parts. Thanks for all the info and advice. Next time I will start with the most simple fix and work towards more complex fixes.

Seems to me we should be listening to woodchuckfarmers advice more often!! Ha ha!

Glad it's fixed!! I've been following this and awaiting a resolution--I had a similar problem with an old Case 448 i had. That ended up being the fuel pump though.

woodchuckfarmers - I read this comment. During my half baked diagnostic techniques ... I cleaned the gas tank I crushed the filter. After crushing the filter I removed the filter. Only now the filter got clogged with stuff. Blocking the gas from exiting the tank. Live and learn

Well I had the same thing on a C-141 and it would run for 45 minutes and die. I would take the gas cap off which was vented and blow into the tank and it would start right back up. Ordered a new fuel pump and put it on Thursday and my son took it out to mow with and it ran non-stop for 90 minutes and he finished his yard. That solved the problem for me and I had changed all the fuel lines, filter in the tank and did a complete tune-up before hand and it ended up the fuel pump. Runs good now thanks to all on here that gave me the advice on what to check.

I also had the same problem on a C-161 recently; got used to using it for just 45 min, then the next day for 45 min, then a few days later . . . just to get the job done.

Cleaned the points and also the diaphram in the fuel pump, = problem solved.

Also, the gas line is in/out the bottom of the fuel tank, a brownish residue gets on that screen (looks like rust, but it's a plastic tank), easy to clean - heard that it is becoming a lot more common with the new 10% ethanal gas (be sure it is at least 97% octane). The ethanal hastens the fuel lines becoming stiff, and the diaphram too (it had that brownish slime), especially on a 35 year old tractor.

Good luck,
