motorheadhorse 0 #1 Posted August 4, 2012 hi guys! thanks for all the help and cooment to my first problem! but i have some new ones! i did an engine swap recently on my c-160, i got the tractor few months ago and it just burned oil by the quarts! so i gotten a good low hours 14 horse kohler off massey 14.it had the drive shaft etc removed and put on my. it started to be a good engine before hand,i had it running nice, but after the swap it became noise! it runs ok and strong! the noise seems to comes from the side where the coolong fans are and where the shaft use to be. can this be a simple balance issue? almost nocking but cant figure why now?? i'm thinking i'm drawing all the power off the opposit side now! well thats that! i'm thinking just rebuilding the old engine, that run ok but it used a lots of oil and after about 20-25 minute, it just shut off buy it self! and backfired once! i just took the head off the engine and it was a mess, lots of carbon build up and some black oil tar deposit! can i just service this engine without having to do major work? like new rings etc? thanks! hbrooks49 12 #2 Posted August 4, 2012 OK, I know what I would do but why don't you wait for someone that's played with these a lot more than I have to chime in. If it was mine I would decarbon the head and oil tar, put the head back on, pour a little motor magic (marvel or blaster) down the plug hole, leave it a couple of days and fire it up andwait for the smoke to disappear..... you'll probably have to pull the plug and it wouldn't hurt to pull the head afterwards to make sure it's cleaned out fairly well. May or may not work but it doesn't cost much. Now there may be some very valid reasons not to do that (loose pieces of hard carbon being one - not sure how well they clear on these engines) ..... it will be interesting to see what others say. bowtiebutler956 650 #3 Posted August 4, 2012 If it was burning that much oil, there are no addatives that are going to help you. They sell a very complete rebuild kit on fot the K341 for about $120. Have you ever rebiult an engine before? These Kohler's are quite simple, and when done that K341 is the baddest of the old thumpers, and would give you many years of service. Hydro 131 #4 Posted August 5, 2012 If you're going to have to spend some money I would be inclinded to think about rebuilding the 16. I swapped out the opposit way. I went from a 14 to a 16 and the difference is more than it sounds. Don't know what you have it in, perhaps not as much of a difference on a manual but certainly a big difference if you're running a Hydro.
Fordiesel69 271 #5 Posted August 6, 2012 You will want the 16 horse that was on there. Trust me!!!! If you put the piston to the top see how much it slaps back and forth in the bore. See if it fits niclyor if it is loose and report back. If the cylinder is very worn, it can get expensive, but yes you can bauy all the cheap tools you need at harbor freight and the cheap stens / rotary kit from ebay and it will work just fine. If you need to involve a machine shop, then it could be pricey. Let use know on that piston, maybe even some pics / videos so we can give you better advice.
