520h for $350 and busted mule drive pulleys

Recommended Posts

sdgmc05

Hello I am new to the wheelhorse community. I recently purchased a 1990 520h with 361 hors,.picked it up for $350! It's in great condition and I bought it off the original owner who had all the manuals also. Only problem is the two idler pulleys in the mule drive are shot, well at least the bearings for that matter. Where can I get new pulleys or just the bearings? I'm in southern California. Thanks in advance.

Try partstree.com then toro consumer. You may be better off getting a used mule drive off ebay or craigslist.

Need to get new pulleys. Some of the older mule drives had replaceable bearings. They would be the ones with cast pulleys but I doubt that yours is that old. Pulleys are a common size, should be able to find at farm stores or a NAPA or maybe even a outdoor power place that sells aftermarket items such as Stens.

The mule drive for a 60" deck is different than a smaller deck. I would assume you have a 48" deck though but just so you know. I haven[t really ever checked the pulley size on either though.

The pulleys in my tractor are not cast iron, so entire pulley replacement is required?

Depending on your deck size (60"???) -- I walked into my old Wheel Horse dealer Saturday PM to order a pulley for my tennsioner (mule drive) (37 inch SD using the standard V-belt; not the six sided one) -- I showed the counterman what I needed and he reached under the countertop and pulled out a brand new replacement ($29) -- So the pulleys must be pretty common item -- And the mule drive is easy to rebuild once you get the old pulleys and spacers off

My tractor has the 48" side discharge deck. not many toro dealers around me that carry wheelhorse tractor parts. If someone could recommend an online dealer to get the pulleys that would be great!

I have some recent experience with putting the pulleys on--I had both go bad within a couple weeks. The outside pulley went out and I jumped on eBay and bought the cheapest one I could find (toro part 104975 reference in my parts manual). Getting the old one off required a little effort as the bearing was more or less welded to the shaft. I got it on fairly easy, but it just seemed to not fit right and spin well. A week later my inside pulley (toro 104975) went out. I decided to buy the genuine toro pulley this time, and wow is it really a different fit. I kind of figured a pulley wouldn't be all that different, but I can already tell that the non Toro one will have to be replaced again in the near future while the Toro one seems like it will last 20 years. I also really don't think it spins as well--I might just go ahead and put the toro pulley on the outside one and chalk it up to learning my lesson. In my humble opinion, with any moving parts or belts you should always use genuine, and this just reaffirmed this for me. I'm not an expert by far but I hope this helps. Also I have a 60 inch deck---I don't think the mule drives are different though? Maybe someone else knows for sure??

Just looked it up on partstree here's the link for the model of your deck, the pulleys are the same part number as my 60 inch deck--http://www.partstree.com/parts/?lc=toro_consumer&mn=15-48SC02%2C+48%22+Side+Discharge+Mower%2C+1990&dn=810715R1-15R10022-0009

Thanks again for all the info. Looks like I will have to be replacing the whole mule drive unit, the inner races of the bearings are fused to the shaft and the shaft has lots of grooves. Can anyone point me in a direction to purchase a new one?- 1990 wheelhorse 520h with 48" side discharge. Also what about getting new belts for the drive and mower?

First thing I'd do is get ahold of member Kelly on here--he has a lot of parts available like this. If the whole mule drive is good I'd just try to buy the shaft and pulleys if you can get it. It just slides in there.

Ok sounds good, the shaft is welded in there.

Your mower will use a 5/8" x 83" drive belt, ( B-83) unless it is dry rotten, use it until it quits.

Your deck Belt will be a 1/2" x 105" belt, (A-105) for a 48" deck.

Tractor supply would have them.
