PTO lever Disengaging

Recommended Posts

NitroJunkie

Hello,

My 1996 520H PTO lever will intermittently disengage while mowing. I checked the obvious, replaced the drive belt and set the tension correctly. I also adjusted the linkeage on the PTO Rod so it will engage tighter but it still happens. Has anyone seen this before that can point me in the right direction.

Thanks

Have you checked the bushings on the PTO lever shaft.

HELLO DAVE, I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM ON A 314-8 AND THE LONG ADJUSTMENT ROD WAS NOT GOING OVER CENTER WHEN ENGAGED. I REMOVED THE ROD AT THE PTO AND BENT IT UPWARD SO IT WOULD. JUST MY TWO CENTS WORTH..

I just had a similar problem with a 414-8. I do not know if the PTO clutch is the same on yours, but what I found was that the stub shaft had gotten worn, and the snap rings that hold it in place against the PTO pulley would pop partially out of the groove when it was engaged.. The PTO would then engage for a few seconds to a minute, but then the pulley would slip on the shaft and disengage from the driven disk. When you released the PTO engagement lever, the tension was removed, and sometimes the snap ring would even pop back into the groove, or you could pull the shaft and get it to pop back in..

My solution was to rebuild the entire PTO, but I had a noisy outer bearing, and the needle bearing was not running smoothly either. I suspect all you need to do is replace that stub shaft and a snap ring or two. I think the shaft was just a few $$ from Toro, and the snap rings I just got at the hardware store.

Oh, and I should mention, I did not diagnose this on my own, but had lots of help from the folks here at RedSquare :)
