mdn1081 1 #1 Posted July 15, 2012 Hello I was recently putting hubs on my 520 to replace the 520 wheels. I had noticed some play where the spindle goes into the swept axle. Has anyone else had this problem? Maybe it was not greased enough, and is worn? I don't know any help would be appreciated thanks.
MalMac 1,332 #2 Posted July 16, 2012 Over time you will get wear. Wear on the spindle and on the axle. It will be compounded if there was not proper maintenance done. You need to look at the spindle and determine if it is the spindle or is the axle is wore. More than likely it will be the spindle. If that is the case and it is excess than a new spindle is what would help. If the axle is bad then try and find a different axle. I have seen where axle have been bored out and bushing put in. Unless you have access to a machine shop it can get expensive real quick. I would look good at the axle and determine if the it is the axle. More than likely it's your spindle. Fordiesel69 271 #3 Posted July 16, 2012 520H with a swept axle, if it ever had a 60" deck on it and not greased regularly, it will indeed wear fast. If there is play, replace the spindles now before it wears the axle. If the axle is worn, it will need to be machined and the inserts that will be used will need to be greased regularly. If not they will wear faster.
mdn1081 1 #4 Posted July 17, 2012 Ok, the tractor that the axle came from did not appear to be maintained properly. And it did carry the 60 as well. I guess I will have to pull the spindles and check the damage. Just more money added to the restore!
MalMac 1,332 #5 Posted July 17, 2012 It has been my personnel experience that on any tractor that a 60in deck was used on has show en a lot of wear. The decks just seem to put a lot of stress on the tractors. Steering components, hitches, lift mechanisms.
