NO SPARK BUT CRANKS OVER! C-160

HI GUYS! I JUST REPLACED MY TRUSTY 16 HORSE KOHLER,TO GOOD USED ONE AND I JUST CANT GET IT TI SPARK! IT CRANKS OVER GOOD AND ALL THE CONNECTIONS ARE OK? I DID AN ENGINE SWAP BUT I USED ALL MY ORIGINAL ELECTRICAL STUFF,WHAT WAS WORKING BEFORE! FIGURE THIS ONE OUT! THANKS!

First with the key on, do you have power to the + side of the coil? if yes now see if you have power to the points? if no check wires back to the switch to find power, if yes now crank the engine with a test light on the neg side of the coil the side the points are hooked to, the light should flash, if yes check spark plug, if no clean the points.

also make sure the condenser lead is attached to the NEGATIVE side of the coil.

Battery voltage to the (+) coil terminal

and

points and condenser to the (-) coil terminal

I have a C-175 with the Kohler KT17 engine.

The engine has been starting and running great then all of a sudden no start and no spark.

Turns out the condenser and coil both went bad.

Then can both be tested with an ohm meter.

YES I DO HAVE POWER BOOTH SIDE,WHEN KEY TURNED ON BUT NOT CRANKED! BUT IN CRANKED POSITION NO FLASHING,BUT ITS ON ! I JUST PULLED THIS GOOD RUNNING ENGINE OFF FROM MY PARTS TRACTOR,AND IT HAD GOOD COIL AND CONDENSER ON IT! AND MY OLD ONE WAS ALSO OK! THE ONLY THING I WAS NOT SHURE,IS THE 2 WIRES COMING TO THE REGULATOR!?? IS IT MATTERS? I HAD SWICH THEM ALREADY BUT STILL THE SAME! NOTE: MY LOCAL TRACTOR REPAIR SHOP TOLD ME JUST TO BUY A NEW ONE AND SCRAP THIS! YEA..F..!

IN CRANKED POSITION NO FLASHING,BUT ITS ON

1) the points are not closing

2) if points are closing, the contacts are corroded and not passing current thru the contacts

3) the wire connecting the points to the coil is defective

4) the points assembly is not grounded properly to the engine block

I had another crank but no start situation. Cleaned the breaker points with emery paper and now it starts.

I did hose down the engine to clean a few weeks ago and left the tractor in a damp environment.

Those little electrons do like corroded contacts.
