Converting side discharge to not side discharge

Recommended Posts

For now, I have the need to remove the side discharge on a Toro 1638HXL without immediately replacing the blades with mulching ones.

Will the grass clump horribly at the side discharge location if I simply cover the exit with a plate as the blades are designed to push the grass to that side?

When I am ready to change the blades to the proper mulching ones, will any of the "mulching blades" that are the correct length and mount design work?

This is a Toro 1638HXL (2003 Model 71227) tractor I am talking about.

You can block any side discharge as long as you cut only one third of grass

height. That is if your grass is 3 in. tall you only cut 1 in.

Don't cut your lawn if it's damp or wet, mow at full throttle, and slower speed.

Keep your deck clean so grass doesn't build up.

Those are a few things I can remember. I'm sure others will jump in.

there is a plastic blockoff plate that covers the discharge, it attatches with 2 short rubber straps with hooks on them. i have one for my17-44hxl & my craftsman lt 1000. can't download pictures this week otherwise i'd show you. we leave it on the sears most of the time. Jay

Thanks everyone.

The tractor didn't come to me with the cover. I've got some sturdy inner fender well which should be good for keeping any potential rocks/debris from forcing pushing through.
