njdpo 10 #1 Posted June 30, 2012 Hi all, Ive been hunting down a 36 inch rear discharge for my Commando 800 for a while now.... And recently I found someone selling a 310-8 for parts (asking $300) - complete 310-8 with flat tires - Owner said motor ran when he parked it in the back shed - seems like it might be frozen up. - Nice condition 36 inch rear discharge deck (yup ... thats why im here ) - Wheel horse cart, rusted and rear panel missing. - Plow blade in great condition. - Countless mice living in the machine (no extra charge) - Seat wasted - looks like the mice took a liking to the interior foam... Anyway I bought the mower deck for $200 bucks - and got the machine, cart, and plow blade thrown in for free. pulled, cleaned, painted, and lubed the new mower deck Installed mower deck on my Commando 800 is a fine looking whole machine - Love that little commando ! Back to the 310-8 ... pulled the motor shroud and cleaned the EXTREME mouse nests in the flywheel area , dumped some kroil into the cyliner, and freed it up the piston - piston and cylinder wall look fantastic, removed carbon ring / cleaned cyl head, all back together. swapped the starter motor, new solinoid, new gas line, added a gas filter too. Motor runs like a brute... In fact the machine started with the tranny stuck low/1st and started to lurch forward on us with the flat tires (funny stuff) ... Whats next ... the 310-8 has two wasted front tires (holes in the sidewalls). Question do these front tires use tubes ? One rear tire is flat also - I may slime this tire and see if she holds air. anybody know where I can find good prices on replacements? My Commando 800 has only 1 clutch/brake pedel (simple) ... BUT the 310-8 has two stop pedels ? the one on the left side (the side where the deck lift handle is) is broken - the paddel is broken from the arm ... The right side pedel is fine - It think it said brake on it ... What is the Left side pedel ? Anybody know where I can find one ? The hood is moderately damaged - It seems someone hit something head on - bent the bottom/front of the hood where it attaches to the frame - and shifted the hood back by about an inch... The owner compensated for this by actually cutting the topside/back of the hood (where the throttle is - so that he could use the throttle) ... I may try to straighten the hood a bit - until I find a replacement ... Change out motor and tranny fluids. With the machine running now - I may have to look for another 36 inch rear discharge deck ... ( here we go again ) . I'll attach a few pics when I get some. Foozerush 40 #2 Posted June 30, 2012 The pedal on left is clutch... One on right is brake. Welcome to RedSquare!!
IthacaJeff 151 #3 Posted July 1, 2012 No question you got a good deal for $200. Deck and dozer blade are worth more than that. The hoods on these 300/400/500 series are a bit flimsy. Unless you plan on doing a restoration, I'd gerry-rig the thing to fit snug and not worry about it. As for tires, my new tubeless tire on my 310 won't hold air for more than a week. I'm sure there is rust on the wheel or valve stem hole leading to leakage. I'd tube it, unless you, again, plan on a resto that includes the wheels. I cannot imagine how the clutch pedal got broken. Sounds abused. Check the vendors here and the classifieds. I'm sure they can't be too expensive. Finally, the 310 may end up being your favorite. I keep thinking I'm going to get rid of mine (too many tractors to fit in the shed), but the thing keeps running and choring and using a whole lot less gas than my 416 or Simplicity Sunstar. It is really my chore tractor. Jeff
njdpo 10 #4 Posted July 4, 2012 Thanks Jeff, Would you guys happen to know if I can swap the hood with perhaps an older rounded hood - such as a C-121 ? Thanks - Dave
brianc423 9 #5 Posted July 8, 2013 Hello, I know this thread is already a year old...I am having an issue with my left rear tire and left front tire losing air. All the tires have good tread left on them, so I don't want to buy new tires, besides that new ones are expensive, and may not seat well and won't hold air. So I would like to get tubes for the front wheels and rear wheels. Does is matter the type of valve stem on the tube? Or do you know of any place online that has the correct tubes I need? Thank you in advance!
welderman85 53 #6 Posted July 8, 2013 I get them at tsc or family farm and home. Online Miller tie has them
brianc423 9 #7 Posted July 8, 2013 Welderman, for the tubes, do I have to be sure to get tubes with a certain type of valve stem? Which of the things you wrote is the tubes at tsc?
