Bought a 212-H what should I know about it

After a long search for another deck for my 310-8, my grass would not wait so I bought a 212-H. Seems to cut well but won't like cutting my 2.5 acres for very long (I think). After riding on the 212-H the difference in bouncing was clear, the 212-H bounces more than the 310-8. Also while on the 212-H I feel less safe on some of the steep grades. But it is cutting so be happy.

The seller said I will need a new battery and he took $20 off the selling price. Yes I know batteries are more than $20 and I hope it is just a bad battery and not a ground leak.

The hydrostatic trans is taking a bit to get accustomed to after a clutch. Yes I am always putting my foot where the clutch normally resides.

Gasoline tank needs to be removed and that debris needs to come out of it. Not thrilled of pouring gasoline around a hot engine. I have a 5 gas gallon can that I bought last year. Yes the government now regulates gas cans and the can has a spout that needs to be depressed for the gas to flow. It is a PITA.

Is there anything particular to a 212-H that I must do to keep it happy? I need to find a service manual for it, PDF form is fine and I guess the Toro/Wheel Horse will have one.

I'm still searching for another deck for my 310-8.

When I was a young kid my grandpa had (I think) a C160H. It was my favorite tractor and the reason I searched for a WH for my first tractor when I moved out on my own. He had a bad habit of not shutting things off while fueling them - it also had the under-hood tank. Sure enough it caught fire in the drive way. By the next time I went to visit him it was long gone to the scrap pile and he had a new Toro in the garage. I was heart broken :crying-yellow:

You should have no problem finding a deck in Penn. Scroll thru Craigslist and watch the classifieds here on Redsquare.

Been doing that and there just aren't any 42" to be found. I have a lead on a lawn equipment salvage place and I may try it.

Ha! The new to me 212-H isn't turning over. The guy said it would need a new battery but I'm starting to think it is more to it. Nothing even when hitting the 60A start on the charger. Are there any safety switches in the mix? I don't see one under the seat.

Never mind....oops. I started looking at the starting switch and connectors and I looked at the one that is attached to the transmission wand. Realized it is part of the starting protocol, realized I had that connector apart this morning to spray with cleaner, then I saw it. It was a three spade connector, just like on my 310 and only the bottom two were attached. Connected the third spade and it fired right up.

I know you have quite a bit of grass to cut (hence a 42" deck would be faster), BUT don't turn down a functioning 37" deck -- Those decks are beasts -- I have heavily used mine for 20+ yrs and other than wearing out and replacing a set of blades, one or two belts, and one pulley have done nothing but routine blade sharpening and deck lubrication
