Wheel Crazy 23 #1 Posted June 28, 2012 I just picked up my first round hood!! It's an all original 1962 502!! The story on the tractor is a guy in the thumb of Michigan bought it brand new and he soon gave it to his brother. The brother kept the 502 in his barn for 25 years. Then the brother decided to sell the tractor to the guy I bought it from. The guy I bought it from planned on using it for a parts tractor for his 854. It has a nice 42 inch Wheel Horse plow on it that has all the parts and is in great shape! The 5 horse power Tecumseh does have great compression, I also got a 5.5 Honda motor(not a clone) in on the deal. So I may try to get the original running or put the Honda in it. The only thing that's not original is the rear rims and tires. I paid $250 for it $5 for delivery. Did I do ok? What is it worth? I may even buy a bathtub trailer from it's original owner. Sorry to bore you with the story, Here are the pictures!! Where are the ID tags on this? Thanks!

Kelly 1,033 #3 Posted June 28, 2012 you did good, price is about right for what you got, maybe even a bit low, the seat looks to have been changed but the cover looks orig. the seat should be a soild square seat pan, aside from that you did good, heck you can probably sell the honda for $

Yeah there is another pan in that cover that may be the original square one. The one that is on it now is the aftermarket round one. Yeah not sure if I am keeping the motor or selling it? bowtiebutler956 650 #8 Posted June 28, 2012 Awesome deal!! I'm not a big fan of Teckys, but on an original like that you need to fix the original engine for sure! Matt :flags-texas:

JUSS10 250 #15 Posted June 28, 2012 i too have become a fan of the tecky motors. i have a 654 that i got running for my grandfather to use for driveway grading. I'll tell you what, that little engine can really work. it took a while to get the carb just right (needed a really good cleaning) but after that it fires right up every time and runs like a champ! where about in michigan are you? saw you mention the thumb. seems there are quite a few michigan guys on the forum now! rydogg 186 #16 Posted June 28, 2012 Very nice tractor you got a great deal . The tecumseh engine looks to be a replacement and not the original lauson 5.5hp, I have been fooled once by an owner that put the recoil/blower housing from a lauson 5.5 on a tecumseh 6hp but now have learned how to identify the correct engine. As long as the engine runs I would use it since it looks correct but if correctness is not important I would use the honda clone since they require less maintenance/tuning. I have a 654 with the 6hp tecky that has a belly grader and duals I use it to grade my driveway I am amazed at the amount of gravel this little tecky powered horse will move. stevasaurus 23,301 #21 Posted June 28, 2012 I like the 502/702's...my favorite. I think you did great Brodi. My old 502 was 62-18107...should be at the top of the dash tower. The engine numbers should be on top near the re-coil. It should read HT55C-3088P. The 5.5 has an oil pump in it...the 6 is a splash. Hang on to the engine if it is the 5.5, they are getting rare and are sought after. An all original 502 is not easy to find. :)

rydogg 186 #24 Posted June 28, 2012 Here is a picture of a lauson engine you can identify it by looking directly beneath the pto shaft to see if there is a large indentation with tubes cast into it from the factory you can't go by the blower housing numbers since the housings can be used on tecumseh engines along with a lot of other parts that are interchangeable. I "stole" this picture from the internet it may be a forum members...sorry too hot out to take a picture of my own stuff. The other picture is of my 654 taken 2 winters ago but it still looks the same except for a nicely painted hood that I put on and different rims/tires. rydogg 186 #25 Posted June 28, 2012 Here is another picture I found of an H55 lauson engine with the pulley removed so you can clearly see the indentation that I am referring to.
