Erik1055 9 #1 Posted June 26, 2012 I picked up a 1970 wheel horse push mower for 50 bucks at this past weekend's show. Seems to be in fairly good shape minus a few missing parts. Ive never seen one before, hoping its a good find?

CasualObserver 3,411 #4 Posted June 26, 2012 Sweet! I've been looking for one of those for years. Want one to just do little trim mowing. I keep watching garage sales and auctions... eventually one will show up! If you didn't get a manual, check with Jordan (jdog customs) he should have it. MarkPalmer 81 #6 Posted June 26, 2012 Definitely a rare find. Looks like an aluminum deck too. -Mark-
jdog_kustoms 82 #7 Posted June 26, 2012 that mower looks very familiar to me lol and i think i do have a manual if your interested
Erik1055 9 #8 Posted June 26, 2012 Thanks everyone. Im planning on restoring it, and possible using it as well. I dont know much about older push mowers but it seem like it would be ahead of its time with the electric start and self propelled. The deck is either aluminum or magnesium, probably why it it lasted so long. I bought a manual for it on ebay yesterday, and its for the correct year. I'll post pictures when im finished restoring it. -Erik-
MarkPalmer 81 #9 Posted June 26, 2012 It's one to use lightly and have fun with but it also needs to be preserved, as among walk behind mower collectors/aficionados there is no doubt it would fetch several hundred bucks just in its current state. 50 bucks was an absolute steal. -Mark-
KC9KAS 4,744 #10 Posted June 27, 2012 Sounds like you got a good deal on the mower. You say it is also self propelled?
Erik1055 9 #11 Posted June 27, 2012 Yep KC9KAS, the mower is electic start and self propelled. It has a chain drive from the engine to the left front wheel. -Erik-
AMC RULES 37,235 #12 Posted June 27, 2012 Very cool...hope we can get a little video of it in action too, once completed.
VinsRJ 723 #13 Posted June 27, 2012 That was a nice looking mower! I would leave it "as is", just give it a good cleaning / tune up and call it done
Erik1055 9 #14 Posted June 27, 2012 Haha think im to far to just clean up?
MarkPalmer 81 #15 Posted June 27, 2012 The engine internals look really decent from the picture. Is Tec block iron sleeved or am I seeing the ridge? -Mark-
Erik1055 9 #16 Posted June 27, 2012 Yep the block is aluminum of course and has a cast iron sleeve. The cylinder has 7 thousandths wear and the rings are shot. Im going to see if I can get a ten over piston and rings, then hone the cylinder out. I also need to reface the valves and cut the seats, that will be it as far as the machining goes. Everything else is in great condition. -Erik-
SNYFIX 13 #17 Posted June 28, 2012 Biggest "problem" with those was the aluninum drive sprocket on the front axle. They were known to strip the teeth.
Zeek 2,298 #18 Posted June 28, 2012 Nice original mower :handgestures-thumbupright:
Erik1055 9 #19 Posted June 28, 2012 Thanks Zeek! And I havent gotten as far on taking the rest of the mower apart, but thanks for the heads up on the sprocket SNYFIX. Hopefully its still in good shape. -Erik-
