My son brought home a 606...

FREE !! no mower deck, or other impliments.. nice straight frame... has a 8hp Tecumseh... that doesn't run.. looks like a cracked crank case.. and possible cracked jug... carb missing parts,.. spark plug hole stripped... seeing as tecumseh isn't in the small engine biz anymore.. we are currently looking for a replacement ... I'm sure the topic has come up... but what are some "replacement" options?

Are you looking to go with a vintage motor or would you go modern? I went with a Honda 5hp on a 656 and its fantastic. Starts easy, runs perfect everytime and is quiet as a church mouse. If not find a nice little Kohler K-91 for it.

That is a short frame tractor and the dash tower is not as tall as a long frame, so if you want to put a 10hp or bigger Kohler in it, you will need some special parts from other tractors like the 1055, 1045 or 1075, or you will have to cut the hood alot, a 8hp Kohler will be a bolt in and you can use common stock parts to do it, from many models of tractors to name a few 855, 856, 877, commando 8 and a number of others, or use a honda or clone, and the little diesels are getting popular

That is a clean tractor, I would not even restore it, I had a clean 656 same tractor just elect. start I swapped in a 8hp Kohler with all the right parts and I bet no one can tell it is not the orig. engine, the patina on the engine even matched the tractor, now I have a 856, and I love the little thing, I even found the correct ID tag so no one can tell.

the 7hp Wis was a little too tall and a lil too long... nice clean lil engine but just won't fit without modifications..... and it has auto choke.... bummer...

Too bad the Wisconsin won't fit easily. A lot of those Wisconsins, even the smaller HP ones, have forged steel cranks and rods and were incredibly tough small engines.

I have a WH which has been painted over (not a restoration). I found the data plate under the dash panel. The transmission has a high/low range, which makes it an 8 speed. It has no engine or attachments. The markings as I can best tell are:

The research I have done indicates the 605 was only a 4 speed. I wonder if the T indicates an 8 speed transmission.

Does anyone know?

Green400, the last thing in this world I would to do is chop up that tractor in any way - it's in way too good condition for its age to be butchered. I'd vote with the rest of the guys here who say find an engine that fits without major mods and you'll have a rel gem! And you got it for free? OMG!!!!!
