Recommended Posts

I am new to the wheel horse world. I have a 310-8. I was mowing the other day and my drive belt broke, I went to the toro dealer and got a new belt but I can not seem to get it on correctly. Does anyone have a picture or diagram to help? I can get it on but then clutch pulley pulls all the way forward and drags on the fender. any advice would be helpful thanks

Wecome Chad,

I've only replaced a drive belt once, happened to be on a 310-8 a couple of years ago. I, too, had to ask for directions.

I'm not sure I remember everything right, but here goes. . . You will need, of course, to take off the belt guard. You will

need to also take off the fender on that side as well. In order to move the clutch out of the way I believe I wedged a

board against the clutch pedal to depress it. I'm sure there is a more sophisticated way, but I'm just not that kinda guy!

That's the best I can tell ya' from memory. Any of you other folks want to chime in?

Jeff

Chad,

I haven't replaced a drive belt in a while either, so I'm not exactly sure what you mean by "clutch pulley pulls all the way forward and drags on the fender" -- do you have any photos that show how you've installed it?

Jeff's right, you do need to remove the belt guard, but I don't think I've ever had to remove the fender to replace that belt. I believe the correct belt number is 7473.

If I remember correctly, the belt installs around the engine and transmission drive pulleys, and over the top of the clutch/idler pulley. With the clutch pedal in its normal driving position, the arm that the clutch pulley attaches to should be nearly vertical, maybe in a 1 o'clock position or so when you're facing it. You can have a helper depress the pedal to give you room to slip the belt over the pulley, or tie the pedal down with a rope or something similar. That should rotate the arm forward to a more horizontal position, and there shouldn't be any interference with the fender when you're done.

You may as well check that clutch pulley also while you're at it, make sure it turns freely with no unusual noises. It's a simple matter to replace it while you have everything apart.

Hope this helps!

And :WRS:

My mistake, not the fender, but the foot rest!

I take a small rope and tie the clutch peddle forward with the rope around the front axle. You may have to loosen the idler pulley on the clutch to get the belt on. On my tractor the metal bent over the idler catches the belt to stop it when the peddle is pushed in.
