decksetter 50 #1 Posted June 17, 2012 I was putting a roof on a house the other day and saw a 953 in the neighbor's yard. Ended up getting it for $100. Did I do ok? So now the questions begin... -Should I keep it? -What should I do with it? -What should I know about the 953? It appears to have a steering box, some do some don't, right? -Where do I find the serial number? How'd I do price wise? Motor and trans are not stuck, but previous owner said it hasn't run in "a couple of years" so who knows.
Kelly 1,028 #2 Posted June 17, 2012 I'd say you did good on the price, the early 953's had a Ross gear box the later ones used a fan gear more like most other WH's it is up to you what you do with it, but it does look to be in pretty good shape at least from here. AMC RULES 36,945 #3 Posted June 17, 2012 Keep it, make it run, enjoy it...what else...part it out?
Sparky-(Admin) 19,570 #4 Posted June 17, 2012 Dont part it out, complete tractors of this vintage are getting rarer every day. Other than the boat seat it looks pretty original and unmolested. Try to get her running so you can determine the engine and tranny condition before you make a decision to keep or sell it. Mike...............
KC9KAS 4,741 #5 Posted June 17, 2012 I agree...get it running and moving on it's own. Don't part it out. Either fix it up to keep & use, or fix it up to sell.

VinsRJ 721 #7 Posted June 17, 2012 For a $100 you did well. I would also see if you could get it running before making any decisions.
redstallion3201 9 #8 Posted June 17, 2012 The serial number should be on the top of the shift pattern decal. Also very good score I paid more than that for a parts 953. Its up to you but I would keep it.
Martin 2,130 #9 Posted June 17, 2012 i think you did great on the price, if it were me id get it running good and keep it........ like has been said, they are getting harder to find complete and in this condition.
neil 2,398 #10 Posted June 17, 2012 To Part that tractor out would be a tragedy get it going and enjoy it The few extra dollars that you would get if you parted it out would hardly be life changing . its a nice looking tractor & with a bit of TLC you would get many more years out of it. Nice find

Wheel-N-It 2,967 #19 Posted June 22, 2012 These guys have already give you my 2cents worth, which is basically keep it and restore it to an excellant working condition. It appears to have a fine mowing deck on it complete with the factory installed stickers. Definetly get rid of the seat though. Consider yourself very fortunate to have found it before it got deteriorated by weather. I would be very happy with this $100 Wheel Horse.
