gsinal 1 #1 Posted June 16, 2012 a friend of mine has a wheel horse he says it is from the mid 80's and is a 400 series tractor. Also he said it has a kohlor engine claiming it is 18 or 20 hp. the tranny was worked on and fixed once and ran great for a year and a half and then the shifter just pulled out he wants to get rid of the tractor. The motor runs great no smoke sound great.. how hard of fix is the shifter dont they just set in the tranny obviously in a paricular location and the the shifter is pinned in to place. even if the tranny is not fixable thinking if getting it for the motor as a back up for my 520hc if the onan ever goes. any opinions. i will get pics soon thanks
bowtiebutler956 650 #2 Posted June 16, 2012 I believe this is a simple fix. I think its just a set screw that is in the top of the case. It goes through the case, and ito the ball section of the shifter. Just put the shifter back into the trans, and tighten the set screw, but just enough to hold the shifter in place. I had mine apart about 6 months ago, but I can't remember all the details. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong. Matt :flags-texas:
whc160 80 #3 Posted June 16, 2012 Matt you are right. There is a set screw that holds the shifter in place. The lock nut may have come loose or was not tightened up when they did the tranny work. And the set screw came out. It should be an easy fix. If it is a 416-8 with a Kohler I would go for it. Sounds like a good tractor from what you said. Everybody needs more than one around the house. gsinal 1 #4 Posted June 16, 2012 ok there is a set screw do i have to worry about it falling in the transmission. i know i want to drain the oil and replace it when i get it but it there a chance it went in the tranny. if so do i have to break the tranny apart to get it out. can whlvr 994 #5 Posted June 17, 2012 it shouldnt fall in,look down the shifter and look right where it goes into the tranny and you will see it,if anything it would fall outside the tranny,i would get it no matter what motor if ite a kohler and if its the 20 hp it would be a very desirable as it would be a 420,but they were only made in 86,heres a pic of a repair i had to do to one of mine
