I need a little help with a PTO on an old Massey

Recommended Posts

Doubletrouble

So, I have a '38 Massey 101. I wanted to hook up my mower to it today but the pto on the mower wont slide onto the shaft on the tractor. I tried it on the old IH model H and it slid on just fine. Is there a difference since the Massey is a canadian made machine? They both have 1 3/8 shafts with 6 splines. The Massey's splines seem to be slightly wider than the H. Any advise would be appreciated. Thanks

check that one of the splines may be wider than the others. so that the pto shaft will only go on one way so that the locking pin on the driveshaft locks into the pto output shaft. i will have a look at my 1954 M-H 33 diesel later today. but they should work. also try wirebrushing the shaft Jay

ok i checked , my pto tip was cut off w. a hack saw by some P.O. . my drive shaft would almost start on but wouldn't i cleaned & filed the pto , then i ran a flapper wheel on the inside of the driveshaft cleaning it up and every thing fits well. tight tolerances, clean well. side note it has been 20 years sence i mowed with this tractor & 5 years sence i used this drive shaft. my old bush hog shaft went on easy ,but that was a long time ago.

After looking at your pics I think I may have to replace the coupler on the drive shaft of the mower. The PTO shaft on the tractor in in excellent shape. it's never been used, I had to take the cover off of it to try to hook things up. It doesn't have a groove in it like the newer ones for the spring loaded lock pin, it has a hole drilled through it for a pin/bolt to go through to keep it from sliding off the shaft. If I can get a decent pic of the coupler on the mower drive shaft I'll post it. Thanks for the pics and advise Jay.
