Fordiesel69 271 #1 Posted June 14, 2012 Other than engine is the frame and stuff similar. Slowly I want to convert from a 42" deck to a 60" which requires me to source a swept front axle. Do the tie rods / steering need to be changed? Overall I know this is a wheel horse tractor with a briggs engine but is all the other stuff the same?
Fordiesel69 271 #2 Posted June 15, 2012 63 views...... Anyone at all. I own a Gt-1642 and want to run a 60" deck like on the 520-h
zieg72 209 #3 Posted June 15, 2012 You will need the tie rods for the forward swept axle and the steering to do it right. Night and day differences in size. While you are at it get the gear reduction steering, you will be happy as the 60" deck adds a lot of weight. I hope your 16 hp Briggs is in good shape cause my 20 hp Onan really had to work hard keeping that 60 inch deck cutting, especially in the spring,
Fordiesel69 271 #4 Posted June 15, 2012 Now you have me thinking......my 16HP does not even work to run the 42" and I cut only a grass lawn. No weeds. I really wonder if it just my lawn is easy on it, or if the 60" would require a ton more HP. I run a 42" on a kohler 10HP and it works its tail off but still does real well. varosd 1,185 #5 Posted June 15, 2012 I guess it will be all about age and condition of the motor, how tall/wet the grass is and steepness of hills etc. a 60 inch is heavy!
zieg72 209 #6 Posted June 16, 2012 I did a time and gas usage study on my lawn. I compared a 48" versus a 60". I would have to slow way down and even though I would cut 12" more per swipe I could do a nicer job in less time and use about 1/3- 1/2 gallon less gas using a 48" deck. To make the test fair both decks had freshly sharpened blades and newer belts. I had less fatigue after the lawn was done because the lighter deck made the tractor easier to steer. I sold my 60" deck. My $.
Shuboxlover 481 #7 Posted June 16, 2012 I have a GT-1642 w/42" deck AND a 520-H w/60" deck.... In my opinion, I don't think there's anyway my 1642 would run the 60"er.... (and my 16HP briggs twin runs VERY good) just my opinion... BTW....I LOVE my 520 and it does a GREAT job cutting the grass, (if only it would cut higher)
