i have noticed two disticely different feels between the 160 and 161.the 161 has a much lighter steering feel to it.doesnt seem to me like it should, but whats a rookie like myself know? B) so i thought i would ask the WH experts are the steering systems completely the same on these two models of tractors or are there differences? maybe the 160 is just badly in need of a little tlc?dont get me wrong the steering feels fine on both one is just lighter feeling than the other.jim

The C-161 doesn't have the heavy duty spindle kit on it, does it? The thrust bearings would make it steer a little easier, but I don't remember you saying you had the kit - but you were looking for one? B):whistle:B)

I'm 99% positive that every piece is the same between the two. (they should interchange - to say the least.)

When properly greased, and with the front tires inflated to the correct pressure, they should steer the same.

Variables such as engine weight (a C-111 with an aluminum Briggs vs. a C-160 with a cast iron Kohler, for example) or steering wheel diameter will affect the steering effort. Type and frequency of lubrication is another variable.

It might be time to pull the spindles out of the front axle and make sure that the grease is reaching all points. A spiral groove ground into the surface of the spindle shaft will allow more grease to stay in the area where it's needed most.

You might also want to lube the back end of the lower steering shaft where it passes through the lower steering support. This is one location that WH engineers should have installed a grease fitting, but they apparently forgot. B)

thanks TT,you confirmed what i thought.i have a feeling your right about cleaning and lubing the 160. .i may pull apart the 160's steering, give it a good cleaning and lubing.btw no the 161 doesnt have the heavyduty spindle kit,i was just debating on replacing the worn front spindles but i have decided im not likeing the hydro near as well as my 8 speeds. so im thinking seriously of swapping some turfs on the rear (keeping the ags) and keeping the smoking k341 for a later rebuild, putting a nice running k301 i have on it and selling it to add to my toy fund.
