Wheelhorse 700 - What do you know about them?

What do you know about a Wheelhorse model 700 tractor?

Any info would be appreciated.

Using a Google search it looks like they were built in 1969 only, labeled as a WorkHorse 700. Featured a 7hp Kolher, 3 forward gears and one reverse.

They came with an H-70 Tecumseh Electric start. No Kohler so far as I know. They are thought to be somewhat rare.

Sorry about that. I am so used to typing Kolher when referring to Wheel Horse tractors that I still type it even when I am thinking Tecumseh.......

Looking at the manual there were two model numbers 3741 and 3745, both Tecumseh/Lauson engines but one with electric and the other a recoil start. Not sure what other info is wanted? Worth rebuilding/repairing/refurbishing? Most likely :)

I got one about a year ago from a local fellow. It is in pretty good shape, but the govenor is messed up.....It won't throttle up under a load....and the original key switch is shot, and NLA.

I can use a different switch and use a starter solenoid.

The guy put a "short-block" on this tractor, and I am afraid he messed something up inside the crankcase. For some reason, my engine has a 2nd output shaft too.

I picked-up this tractor. It is Workhorse 700. Engine is missing and gas tank too. The sheet metal is fadded and a bit rusty, but the tractor is in pretty much original condition. The labels (other than the hood - which is fadded) are in great shape. It has a deck too. I'm wondering what it would take to drop an engine in this tractor to make it a runner. I think the route to take for starters might be to put a cheap Harbor Freight or Northern Tool engine in it. I'd likely use it to tow around the wood cart. Maybe give the mower a try if I could figure it out.

OTOH, I may part it out.

The tractor has tall, narrow front wheels and narrow back wheels. It is a 3 speed w/reverse. Anyone know how stout this variant tranny would be?

the orig gas tank would have been mounted on the engine, that is why it is missing, a few members here have had good luck with the cheap clone engines, as for the trans they are pretty tough, but you can't beat the crap out of them, like everything it does have a breaking point, if it is nice try not to part it out, pass it on to someone else that will do something with it.

If you do try one of those HF engines make sue you tell us how it works out, the folks at the Roanoke store tell me those engines are basically a "aftermarket" Honda engine. The last sales paper I got had a coupon here to get a 212cc 6.5hp side shaft for $99.99

i dont think you will be able to use the pto with the 6.5,if its like the china crap motor i have (which is no better than a boat anchor and sits on the shelf)it has a 3/4 shaft,but it would be ok for towing,id look for a used kohler and then you can run a pto,without the pto abilitie it will never be worth very much as just a towing machine

The work horse 700 does not use a engine mounted PTO only a 3 grove pulley, the deck engagement is done with a foot pedal, the blower has the engagement built on to it, so he should be ok on this model, but if you can get a 1" crank it will make fitting the correct pulley easier.

While this thread is up...I bought a workhorse 700 hood at an swapmeet for 10 bucks to make a clock out of. Would it be a bad idea to cut up this hood if you guys are saying this tractor is somewhat rare? Thanks Jake

As mentioned this tractor would be very easy to do virtually any type of repower with using the simple PTO arrangement. Because the original engine is missing, you get a chance to be creative but I would do it some justice by putting in a good used Tecumseh, even if it isn't exactly the right Tec which would admittingly be difficult to find in good working order. Used horizontal shaft Tecs are a dime a dozen, just be sure to get one with a shaft long enough for the triple pulley. That would be much better than one of those pieces of no-name Harbor Freight throwaways. A fairly easy to find cast iron Kohler K181 would be even better to drop in than what the original engine was if you can dig one up with a long enough output shaft that has the starter/gen.

I've been running the Blue clones for years without issue. If you monkey with the exhaust and/or the air box you have to replace the cab with an adjustable carb. A $20 upgrade.

As for power a clone can be made to make in excess of 15hp for less than a rebiult Kohler. I'm not saying its beter than a Kohler, that it is not....

The K181 Kohler that uses the triple pulley and foot pedal PTO is 1" diameter by 3 5/32" length, I imagine the Tecumseh engines used very similar dimensions. I think as long as the length is approx 3", you will be OK as you can position the pulley. There are also shaft adapters available you could use the original 1" pulley on a 3/4" shaft if necessary.

Well - I decided to sell this tractor. I've got enough irons in the fire. I posted it in the classifieds. I hope it can go to someone that would restore it vs. parting it out.
