squonk 43,939 #1 Posted June 10, 2012 REMEMBER: Spare parts are your friend! I was looking through RS this morning and read the post in the engines section about PTO trouble. I had lots pf problems with my PTO on the 160 when I got it but got lots of used parts and fixed it up. I was thinking, "That PTO has sure been working great!" Went mowing this afternoon. I was almost done when I noticed the big thumper was starting to bark some. I was thinking my vapor lock issue was coming back. It was hot out. I was looking around trying to figure out what was wrong when I saw smoke coming out of the PTO bell. I shut it off and I smelled the burnt grease. The outer brg. was smoked. I said to myself,"you did it again" I have a habit of jinxing people. I worked with a guy who drove a Ford PU. I kept picking on him that his truck was going to catch fire. Well sure enough one day in the parking lot it did. Anyway, I had a spare bell off of another 160. The brg. wasn't great in that one either but it bought me 10 min. so I can finish mowing. Going to Napa tomorrow and get 2 brgs. and fix em both. On with the pics. The offending PTO bell: Removed the snap ring and tapped out the brg. It was still hot and came out with little effort. Notice the pretty blue color: Stub shaft end is beat up and snap ring groove is getting bad. Lucky for me I had another bell for a smaller engine on the shelf that has a good stub. AMC RULES 37,210 #3 Posted June 11, 2012 Precisely why I try to complement others efforts whenever I can. What you put out there will certainly come back sooner or later.
