550 gas tank straps

Recommended Posts

I think I'm going to reproduce the straps myself. There is a very small piece that remains (from epoxy) that I should be able to get the width and thickness from. I can get strips sheared at work. I've been avoiding actually looking inside the gas tank because I don't like what i hear when I shake it hahaha... I'll have to look into what i'm going to do about that. There is definately a mess I'll have to clean from the underside of this hood !!!

Any input is appreciated ! :handgestures-thumbupright:

If that tank is all rusted and/or varnished up with old gas then you should consider another tank rather than mess with that one. It's not the original tank anyway so messing around with it seems pointless unless that's all you have. I would look for the correct tank before you attach new straps to the hood but be prepared to be shocked by the price. The supply is low and demand is high.

Wow.. thanks for pointing that out. Now that you mention it, this tank does look a little square for this model. I'll have to locate the correct one. Can you point me in a good direction to find one?

The original tank is oval. I'm sure you can find pictures here on the site by using the search feature in the upper right corner.

Like I stated before, they are getting tough to come by but they are out there. The best place to find one is the big Wheel Horse show in Arendtsville PA in two weeks, 6/22 6/23. You can find any WH part there. Also a WANTED ad here in the classified section couldn't hurt either

I'm going to try to make it out to the show by early afternoon on the 22nd. I had already planned on going to Johnstown for the Thunder in the Valley event for something to eat and a shirt :) which is almost half way to Arendtsville from where I live. I may leave a little ealier and consider Johnstown my breakfast stop and break. I'll have to pack my one man tent and a bag and stay Friday night and start back home by noon Saturday. I think I can haul the tank, air filter and heat sheild that I'm looking for on the bike ok.
