MarkPalmer 81 #1 Posted June 3, 2012 Here are the pictures as promised, the family owned 867 arrived safely at its new home today awaiting refurbishment. Large brown stains are only dried grease that will be cleaned. I couldn't find anything major broken on the tractor, only a few minor items that need to be addressed. This thing was amazingly well maintained. I have not dug in to the engine yet. The deck is 36" RM-367, there is no rot on it whatsoever and even the spindle bearings are good. There is a little wear on the scalp wheel bushings. Also have BD-4267 dozer blade, also in excellent shape. Plus full set of literature right down to the original WH plastic bag it all came in "Get a Horse... Wheel Horse of Course." I am not going to repaint this tractor as part of its refurbishment for a few reasons. First, the paint is all original and isn't too bad, and actually shows well with waxing having a few personality spots. Second, it's only original once. Third, I'm new to Wheel Horses and don't know about decal availability. Forth, good quality paint is very expensive. Fifth, this tractor will come back to full life and be used for light yard mowing duties, just as it was intended for- important to me as I don't really like showy trailer queen tractors that do nothing. I doubt I'm ever going to use the dozer blade, but it was nice to get the whole kit-and-caboodle. My wife ran this tractor a lot when she was a kid. There is a small dent in the front where she hit a fence at age 12 I thank everyone for the nice welcome to the forum! I'm sure I'll need a lot of help with this project as it progresses. -Mark-

Kelly 1,033 #8 Posted June 3, 2012 Very nice, I would be upset if you did repaint one that clean, and don't get rid of the seat if you put another on it, I'm pretty sure that seat is only used on that tractor so you will probably never find one like it. massey 119 #9 Posted June 3, 2012 It's great that it's staying in the family and I also agree about not repainting it.
Wheel-N-It 2,976 #10 Posted June 3, 2012 WooHoo, that is a fine machine to have whether you are a WheelHorse collector, or just going to have one in your stable. If you can find a pic of your wife as a kid on it, you should have it enlarged and in a frame near where you park your new Horse.
JackC 617 #11 Posted June 3, 2012 The paint looks excellent and with some detailing will look even better. True originals in that condition are hard to come by. Maybe a little touch up on the wheels if there is paint missing to keep them from rusting and you can match the color at a paint store or auto body shop. MarkPalmer 81 #17 Posted June 4, 2012 I got a chance to dig in to the engine yesterday. I checked for spark and had it. I felt for some compression, and although I could feel the piston moving some air, it was not much so I thought I would pull the head to have a look-see at the general condition of the engine. Upon doing so the bore looked pretty good and the combustion chamber and piston head were reasonably clean. It spun over easily but then I noticed only the exhaust valve opened, the intake valve did not open at all which explains why it stopped running for my father in law. I removed the breather cover, but didn’t see anything wrong with the valves. I already knew at this point the engine would have to be removed and disassembled, so I got it off the tractor and started tearing it down. My father and law said it was leaking a lot of oil out the front, and he thought the crankshaft seal was bad. There was a lot of oil down on the frame of the tractor on the flywheel side. When I pulled the flywheel, the seal looked OK and there wasn’t much oil behind the flywheel. Then I discovered the bearing plate bolts had worked themselves a little loose, and the oil leak was from between the block and bearing plate. When I removed the fuel pump, I noticed the actuator arm was gone. I could also see through the hole that the cam lobes for the intake valve and fuel pump did not move. Turns out the fuel pump actuator arm broke off and somehow lodged itself between the cam and block, and the cam ended up snapping so this is how the engine met its demise after 40 years of running. (It had never been rebuilt.) Fortunately everything is repairable with no major damage done to the block. I am going to do a full rebuild on it with a .010 overbore, along with new cam, valves, etc. Should end up good as new. Once the tractor is running again, perhaps I'll let my wife crash it in to our fence for old time's sake :)
