Electro12WH 50 #1 Posted May 22, 2012 I have a '70 Electro12 which doesn't have a starter solinoid. It has a heavy duty ignition switch (#8362). Toro wants $75 for a new one. Does anyone know a part # for Napa? I stopped by NAPA and they couldn't figure it out. Am I better off converting over to a solinoid?
pfrederi 18,558 #2 Posted May 23, 2012 If originality isn't important I would definitely go with the solenoid much cheaper $13 for the solenoid at Lowe's and about the same for a switch. Does you Electro have the battery ignition system or the breakerless style? (Need different switches...
Electro12WH 50 #3 Posted May 23, 2012 It's breakerless. I believe I would have to change to points also. Originality isn't really important as obsolesence takes over, I have to make some changes. I can't afford the electric pto and the push/pull throttle is just annoying.
pfrederi 18,558 #4 Posted May 23, 2012 No need to change to a points system. Just make sure you buy an ignition switch that has a magneto terminal. You want to ground out your breakerless ignition coil. Absolutely do not apply voltage to it. (Mag switches ground out the system properly.
Electro12WH 50 #5 Posted May 23, 2012 Does it ground to run or ground to stop? Can a separate wire to ground with an on/off switch work for temporary?
pfrederi 18,558 #6 Posted May 24, 2012 Ground to stop. Check your switch for continuty between the M terminal and the housing (or G terminal) with the switch in teh off position. When you turen to run or start ther should be an open (infinite) reading. Both TSC and Lowes have ignition switches and solenoid. (about 12-13 bucks each) just make sure you get an ignition switch withe M terminal
