Looking to Buy a Wheel Horse D and Need Some Help!

Recommended Posts

Wheel Horse Kid

Hello,

I have been looking for a Wheel Horse D series tractor for a while now and came across this one tonight that I really like. The guy who is selling says that it is a Wheel Horse D but he says that it is a 14hp. No 14 hp Wheel Horse D Series Tractors were ever made, so either he put a different motor in it or he made a misprint.

Could someone please tell me what model of D this tractor is and if it has the correct motor or not.

Here is a picture of it:

Thanks,

Taylor

Thanks for the input!

A couple of more questions:

I am not very familiar with D tractors and was wondering what kind of pto setup this tractor has?

Also, what would be a fair price range for the tractor judging from the pictures?

Lastly, did these just come with 16hp single cylinder Kohler motors then?

Any other feedback would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Taylor

they have a pto for the deck that has a front mount mule set up or a pto shaft that runs to the rear of the tractor some d 160`s came with the single kohler some had a twin 16 hp onan and then they had a d 180 with a twin hp kohler engine or a d 200 with a 20 hp twin kohler

It all depends on if it is a d-160 with a 14 or a d-180 and someone has it all modified and does it have 3 point and rear pto and does it run and drive good

Looks just like my D160 except mine has the twin 16 hp onan. From what I san see in the pic it looks to be a 16 hp kohler, shot from other side would be helpfull. Also looks to NOT have a rear pto or the 3pt hitch.

As long as it runs and drives properly you should be able to get it for...say $500 give or take.

Good luck.

Looks to be in fairly good condition.

Thanks for the great reply.

You gave some much needed info! I emailed the seller and asked for some more pictures, so hopefully he will send me some soon.

Is it possible to install a 3 point hitch and rear pto on the tractor if I would buy it?

Also, what category hitch is this?

Thanks,

Taylor

Ask him to count the head bolts, it could be a 16hp seeing as it has the high mount starter on it

Ok, my friend, I give up. How can you tell it has no 3-point hitch? You really got me curious.

Thanks for the offer. I may be interested in getting a rear pto and 3 point hitch for it if I decide to purchase it. Can you please send me a pm as far as prices would be for a rear pto and 3 point hitch (and accessories to attach them)?

Thanks,

Taylor

Yes, it does look pretty clean. I agree that the "chicken wire" grill will need to be replaced, that kinda bothers me!!! :laughing-rofl: Don't know about price yet.

Yeah, the chicken wire grill looks pretty bad. It might be an indication of further jerry-rigging on the tractor. It would be wise to look at it a lot more closely.

The upside is, is that the grills come around quite often on ebay.

When you look at it, make sure it runs and moves, and keep your ear open for any grinding or whining sound coming from the hydro. Luckily, there are plenty of experienced folks around here that know D Series hydros quite well.

Great suggestions! :) I never thought of the idea that the tractor might have had some jerry-rigging done to it due to the fact that the grill has been messed with. I did find a couple of grills on ebay, so I don't think that there will be any problem finding another grill for it.

I am going to try to go over it really well. I will definitely look for the things that you mentioned!

Looking at the picture, the tractor seems to be to close to the cabinet or what ever that is to have the 3 pt hitch as it does stick out a little ways. Just my :twocents-02cents: Also with it having the belly mower.

Could be wrong... :dunno: :hide:

That seems to make sense to me! :techie-eureka: I guess to be 100% sure, I will just have to look at it!

The hub caps are a great bonus. If I get the tractor, hopefully I can clean them up and make them shine!!!!

Has any one else noticed the red bar (brace) behind the chicken wire grill? Curious as to what that is. I believe the grill is actually made from expanded metal.

I saw that also and am also wondering what it is. Is it some sort of support for the grill????
