Looking to Buy a Wheel Horse D and Need Some Help!

Looks just like my D160 except mine has the twin 16 hp onan. From what I san see in the pic it looks to be a 16 hp kohler, shot from other side would be helpfull. Also looks to NOT have a rear pto or the 3pt hitch.

As long as it runs and drives properly you should be able to get it for...say $500 give or take.

Good luck.

Looks to be in fairly good condition.

Ok, my friend, I give up. How can you tell it has no 3-point hitch? You really got me curious.

Looking at the picture, the tractor seems to be to close to the cabinet or what ever that is to have the 3 pt hitch as it does stick out a little ways. Just my :twocents-02cents: Also with it having the belly mower.

Could be wrong... :dunno::hide:

That's one heck of a good observation! My hats off to you sir.

Oh yeah, I noticed the red brace behind the grill too. I thought it might be something specific to D-160's with onan's or something. Maybe something to do with the PTO? I sure hope it's not some further jerry-rigging.

Okay, so I am really curious about that red brace now. If someone could clear it up for me, I would appreciate it!!! :bow-blue:

Also, looking at the dust on and around it, and the lack of tire tracks, I am guessing that it hasn't moved in quite a while.

Would this be a good thing or a bad thing?

Bad, but by no means a show stopper. It may be perfectly fine and sitting there because is wasn't needed; or there is a problem with it, and they parked it there and it hasn't moved since.

I just thought I'd add that observation for whatever it's worth. You might want to ask the owner when was the last time it was driven. If he says very recently, then it might be a red flag.

Also, all of this is just my opinion, not my advice. Sometimes it's important not to over analyse things.

I'm thinking more jerry-rigging, although it might just be a brace to keep the hood from shifting side to side. I left my grill :thingy: out once, by mistake, and noticed that the hood kept coming unlatched :confusion-confused: thought to myself whats going on. Thats when I noticed I left the grill out. I believe the grill adds some rigidity to the grill shroud

Also, I checked my D160 with the Onan engine and that brace is not there.

I think the odds of a D-160 having a 3 pt and PTO are less than say the 180 and the 200 but having a belly mower really doesn't mean it can't.. All in all it has nice hubcaps....good decals....good steering wheel...nice seat....looks to be around the year my 180 is with the brake and motion lever in one. That brace behind the grill appears to exit on the right side below the engine, There is a cable at the right footboard for what...who knows. Can't tell about the mower....hopefully it is a good one..

Start it up and drive it around a bit. Check the steering for looseness..Driving is important. The expanded sheet metal grill I could live with for a while...lol.

The D series tractors were, in my opinion, used very hard in their lives. I'm sure Wheelhorse sold them as being the toughest out there and the owners worked them. Jerry-rigging is pretty common with a 35 to almost 40 year old machine. The owners didn't have them to get out and ride once in a while. These tractors put food on the table and needed to run daily. Most folks didn't have the means, time, or money to have them repaired properly.

Okay, Thanks for the clarification and observation. Those things that you mentioned are differently worth looking into.

Thanks for the info about the grill and hood. It must have been something that was added.

Thanks for the great info! Having a 3pt and rear pto would for sure be a great bonus, I guess I will just have to look for them when I go to look at the tractor. I am the same way about the grill. I would like to eventually replace it, but I could live with it for now. That bracket must be some kind of support.

I for sure want to start and drive it around (or have him drive it around) and see it run. I ain't gonna buy it unless it starts and drives. I will be sure to check the steering. I have heard that this can be a problem with them.

I understand that it has probably been worked pretty hard. If I get it, it is definitely not going to sit around!

As an aside, I'm told that one of the disadvantages of the Wheel Horse rear pto is that there is no speed reduction, and for that reason, it only works with wheel horse attachments. Most other rear pto driven attachments are geared to work at 540rpm. Can anyone confirm this? I don't want to hijack the thread, just a little clarification since the point about rear pto's has been brought up.

Thanks for all the help guys, but it looks like I will not be getting the Wheel Horse D Tractor after all.

Here is the reason:

We went to a sale at our fairgrounds today. It is a big consignment sale that a auction company host each year. There are usually about 100 tractors there. Well, we kinda went hog wild on buying tractors this year. We bought a John Deere RX75 Lawn Tractor with Deck and Bagger, a John Deere 312 Garden Tractor with Deck, an Agrifab 38" lawn sweeper, a Wheel Horse 8 hp Garden Tractor with Deck and Spare Tires, part of a John Deere Cart, 2 John Deere Seats, and an Arien GT20 Garden Tractor with Deck and Leaf Vac!
