bean 85 #1 Posted May 9, 2012 hello, i am selling a transmission that i had in my rj59. it has sit on the shelf for several months. it works flawlessly and was never a problem. i got it down to double check everything and noticed its not as quiet as my 70s 4spd trans, when turning the pulley by hand. the 70s trans in completely silent, while the rj makes a neddle bearing type sound. nothing that sounds bad, just like there are needle bearings instead of roller bearings. is this normal? are the rj trans , by design, noisier than the later transmissions? here is a video
stevasaurus 23,301 #2 Posted May 9, 2012 I would think you are fine, may need a little oil circulation after sitting that long is all. One big difference in the RJ transmissions compared to the others is the axles turn in brass bushings on both ends of the axle...no needle or ball bearings. Another difference is the design of the case...the RJ trans has 2 steel side plates and the bearings and bushings are seated in the plates...the others are 2 cast iron halves bolted together. Both of the above could make a transmission a little noisier. :) :)
bean 85 #3 Posted May 9, 2012 thanks for the reply. I wanted to get a few opinions before selling it. I never turned it by hand before, so I don't have anything to compare it to, other that the 70s trans, which is absolutely noiseless.
VinsRJ 723 #4 Posted May 9, 2012 As Steve said there are differences between the RJ's 5003 tanny and the later 4-speeds. For one, the side plates are not pinned, therefore there maybe a little alignment deviation when put together. Next if the tranny has sat for a long period of time the bearings would have dried out a little. So long as the imput shaft spins freely without binding, chattering or crunching noises you should be fine. Shift it through all the gears and make sure the axel shafts work as the should. stevasaurus 23,301 #5 Posted May 9, 2012 That transmission sounds great Bean. If you want to run it a little, I clamped mine to the picnic table seat, figure eighted a long fan belt to one of my tractor drive pulleys. Gets the oil circulated very nicely. Thumbs up.
